Closing date extended for "hook & line" fishing submissions
September 8, 2003
NSW Fisheries has extended the closing date for submissions on the Fisheries Scientific Committee’s proposed listing of hook and line fishing as a “key threatening process” in areas important to threatened fish species.

The Director-General of NSW Fisheries, Steve Dunn, said the extension followed requests from community members for more time to consider the proposal.

The closing date for submissions has been extended from Friday, September 12 to Friday, October 3.

Last month the Fisheries Scientific Committee called for public submissions on the proposal, which is based on scientific findings that hook and line fishing adversely affects some threatened fish species.

Mr Dunn said the Government had stressed the proposal will not lead to any general bans on hook and line fishing.

“If the listing goes ahead, NSW Fisheries will be required to prepare a threat abatement plan.

“This means we will need to consider the management of hook and line fishing in all areas important for the survival of threatened species – but it does not mean there will be bans on all hook fishing.”

Further information on the proposal is available from the NSW Fisheries website www.fisheries.nsw.gov.au or from the committee’s executive officer, Melissa Walker, on 8437 4953.
