The Alliance to Save Hinchinbrook believes the second stage of the Port Hinchinbrook development in north Queensland would turn the world heritage area into little more than a common canal suburb.

The group has lodged two submissions with Environment Australia, which will announce this week whether it intends to impose any restrictions or further reviews on the planned resort and residential development.

Alliance to Save Hinchinbrook spokesman David Haig says the first stage has already spoiled the area, and stage two should not be allowed to go ahead.

"Already stage one and the boat facility impact heavily on the aesthetics of the area," he said.

"It is a world heritage area and aesthetics is a fundamental and vital part of world heritage, and that should be the standard."
