Hi Sonny

Check out other pages on this web site that give you details on using an Alvey.
Spooling up - http://www.ausfish.com.au/alvey/18.htm
Casting - http://www.ausfish.com.au/alvey/10.htm
Servicing - http://www.ausfish.com.au/alvey/14.htm

Alvey reels have been around since Adam ate apples.
You can still buy a 400/A - check them out here - http://www.ausfish.com.au/alvey/2.htm
Although they have done away with the ring these days.
Good luck.

would that be one with the almost turtleshell brown, bakelite spool, sonny ?

if so it may have some age to it - I'm 36 yrs old & learnt to fish with one in my preteen years

yep i would say that about describes it , how long of rod does it need to be on andhow many guides does the rod need and say with a 2or 3 oz wt.s about how far should one be able to cast it I usualy use abu blue yonder reels on 12 ft rods but thaught it mite be fun to catch a few with this old reel and just getting the hang of it would be quite experience thanks .

Sonny,

A light, crisp action 10ft rod suited to a spinning reel would do, spool the reel with 10lb or 12lb line at a maximum & like any reel it will cast best when fully spooled. Make sure you wind the line through your fingers onto the reel when retrieving with an even tension & you'll avoid birdsnest when you cast. When you first start casting use a slightly heavier weight than you normally would to get the hang of it.

It might be 20 odd years old but you'll get another 20yrs of fun out of it.

Sonny,
Make sure you yell, "Get away there, ya bloody mongrel" when you cast - gets you another 20 yards. ;)
Cheers,
Jeff

heres a few of my alvey reels l dont use these reels but there is still a place for the alvey particuarly when it comes to surf fishing , and they probably still have caught more fish in australia than an other type of reel . for me the attraction is mainly their history the good the good looks of the old reels .
an alvey will last a life time

My question is....are there any other type of reels apart from Alvey's..the rest are just eggbeaters
