Has anyone ever fished the Brisbane River, say just below the crossing near Karana Downs for the likes of Bream or Jacks? I know the lower reaches of the river always look like they should be plowed, not fished, but a look at the upper reaches recently seemed to show some reasonable country.
I'd appreciate your opinions.

Hi wacco,
Interesting handle BTW, above the crossing is fresh, below can be fresh too if they let out enough water from Wivenhoe. Never heard of bream or Jacks there, although I personally have not fished there. Those I have talked to who fish up that way are pretty much chasing bull sharks, who dont mind a bit of fresh. Above the crossing , some bass spangled perch and fresh water gar. Oh and plenty of catfish either side. [smiley=zzz.gif]

Thanks SeaHunt. Chasing Bull Sharks would definately not be on the cards, although I guess I'd have a crack at the freshwater stuff. To do that I need a freshwater licence though, don't I?

No SIP (Stocked Impoundment Permit) required as you are not fishing in a stocked impoundment.
No requirement in QLD to have a freshwater licence, just a SIP if fishing in a dam that is under the SIP regulations.

Used to drive my tinny up there from here, took about an hour, nice spot to fish really, plenty of wildlife around, most prize catch were tarpon (for me) plenty of gar and bream are quiet common, then you get to the vermin like eels and catties, i hear bass can be caught but never got any, oh yeah the sharks ;D

So if I was going to try my luck, how do I avoid the sharks, or is it a case of getting used to being busted off a lot?
On the shark theme, if I decided to target these and didn't want to get myself a dedicated heavy rig, would something like a big hook and some heavy venetian blind cord do the trick? What sort of bait do these sharks go after up there?
Mind you I'd probably s**t myself if it came to having to haul the thing into my brother-in-laws little tinny.

They are usually not that big. A couple of feet of wire trace at the end of 20 - 30 pound line should be enough. For bait , tye half a pilchard or chunk of mullet flesh, I don't think they are very fussy.

You would be suprised on how light an outfit you can catch the bull sharks on just use some wire and hang on. Grab some 3 or 4'0 hooks, some 4-6kg line and go have some fun they run everywhere and fight clean you probably won,t get many over 1m or so long so a good landing net comes in handy for dehooking and releasing these little brutes.
