The Australian Crime Commission says parts of the nation's fishing industries are involved in organised crime worth at least $100 million a year.
The commission gave a briefing to a meeting of environment ministers in Adelaide, which outlined the activities involve poaching, people smuggling and gun and drug running.
Federal Fisheries Minister Warren Truss says the scope of the crime came as a surprise to ministers.
"The police's concern is links between organised crime, trafficking in drugs, and elements of the fishing industry," he said.
"Those are the key areas that were the subject of discussion today.
"The Commonwealth Government has commissioned a $200,000 study on crime in the fishing industry and to look at ways that we can address those issues."
