The Queensland Government is reminding people who suspect illegal fishing to report it to the 24-hour toll-free Fishwatch hotline (phone 1800 017 116).

Primary Industries and Fisheries Minister Henry Palaszczuk said the Fishwatch hotline, which is toll free within Queensland, was an important source of tip-offs for the Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol (QBFP).

Illegal activites include illegal use of nets, fishing in closed waters, fishing in closed season, taking female crabs, taking undersize fish, taking excess to bag limit on fish, using excess numbers of crab pots/dillies, destruction of marine habitat, stealing other peoples crabpots/dillies and stealing oysters.

Mr Palaszczuk said the QBFP had received 482 reports through the Fishwatch this financial year (2003-04).

"It is recommended if you see any fishing activities that you suspect are illegal, you should follow these simple steps:
* record the date, time and area where the activity occurs;
* record any vehicle registration numbers and a description of any vehicles involved;
* record any boat registration numbers and a description of any vessels involved;
* if you know the person or persons involved, give their details as well;
* give an accurate description of the activity involved;
* ring the Fishwatch Hotline to pass on this information."
