New bans on night fishing in Lake Macquarie and Tuggerah Lakes
June 17, 2004
NSW Fisheries have announced a ban on fishing at night around power station outlets in Lake Macquarie and Tuggerah Lakes, between Gosford and Newcastle on the NSW north coast.
Director-General of NSW Fisheries, Steve Dunn, said the new restrictions have been introduced to help protect juvenile fish stocks.
“Illegal fishing is a growing problem at the Munmorah, Eraring and Vales Point power station outlets, despite the very best efforts of NSW Fisheries officers,” said Mr Dunn.
“We have received a number of complaints from the local community about illegal fishing happening at night around the outlets during the cooler months.
“Anglers have been catching juvenile fish, which congregate around the outlets where warm water is discharged.
“The new restrictions, which are now in place, prohibit anglers from fishing at these locations – from boats and on the shore – between 6pm to 6am from
1 May to 31 August each year.
“NSW Fisheries will be putting up signs to advise anglers of the closures. These will be in place by the end of next week.
“We will also be conducting community advisory sessions around the power station outlets for the next couple of months to explain the closure to fishers, and NSW Fisheries officers will be stepping up their patrols.”
Mr Dunn said any fisher found fishing illegally within the closed areas could face serious penalties.

What a bunch militant numbskulls NSW fisheries are :-X.
A few people continue to speed through school zones, I advocate closing those roads to all and sundry during school hours. Why would this idea never get up ???. Would it be considered outside and an abuse of those that adhere to societys rules? Yet it would be protecting our most important resource - children!
What good is society if those that do the right thing are punished for it. Society is based on the pretence that those who break the law run all the risk of punishment. Aussi Democracy at it's finest again NSW fisheries ::). nq

If they ban rec fishos there, won't that mean there is no-one there to keep an eye on things? If it is popular with rec fishos then I guess they should have kept it under control already, but I've been told you only really get undersize fish there anyway (and thousands of them). In reality this is probably another fisheries management green zone being introduced under a different guise. Is that such a bad thing? Lake Macquarie is an RFO and the fish will end up being caught by rec fishos anyway. Probably better to have the green zone there than in the channel.

Jockey I have been interested of late as to who you really are?
I'm not asking this to be offensive, abuse you or "flame" you.
I am just intrigued by your veiws and your direction in some debates.
If you don't want to reply to this I understand, or if you want to PM me that would be OK.
To break the ice I will start.
My name is Alex and I live in Newcastle. Lake Mac is where I do alot of my fishing.
I lived in Melbourne for 5 years and believe that you may have lived in Vic at some stage from some of your posts.
I worked in industry for awhile (9 years) but now I am a fulltime student (and loving it).
What I really want to know is where (roughly) do you live and vaguely what do you do for a living.
With this information then perhaps some of us can better adjust our responses to be more relevant.
Now don't get me wrong, I'm not looking to start our previous discussions (whiting limit) all over again.
Just interested thats all.

If this is like a lake further south with a power station the policing problem stems from the fish being minced as soon as they are captured thus making it impossible to check legal lengths, the only thing that deters the majority of these groups is day light.

Hi Alex I live in SEQ. I am a 'technical professional.' Lately I've been fishing at Noosa, Fraser, Caloundra, some river on the south side of Brissie, the gold coast and Kirra. I got a lot of the info about NSW and Victoria from the web. Not all of it directly as some of it has been downloaded and converted to a more readable format.

I hope that what is happening to us here in QLD at the moment is not the start of what has happened to NSW Rec Fishers. Where the idiot factor of a few stuffs up the whole show for most of us who do the right thing. Get more Officers out there and stop wasting our money on research and more bloody signs . Learn a thing or 2 from the Terittory and the way they run there show.
