A survey has revealed how much money people spend when they fish in dams and rivers.

The finding comes from a survey of fish stocks from Clermont in central Queensland, through to Charleville, and Goondiwindi in the south-west.

Department of Primary Industries spokesman Peter Long says more people are choosing to fish in inland waterways, rather than out to sea.

He says the survey helps quantify the economic and recreational value of fishing.

"We found that Bjelke-Peterson and Boondooma [dams], for example, the average group spends about $400 a trip and [at] Fairburn, it's up to the $1,200 mark," he said.

"People are travelling a lot further and they're staying for longer periods of time."

The survey's findings will be delivered at a Blackwater workshop this weekend.
