View Full Version : How observant are you?

This EPIRB has "something not quite right" about it that could contribute to a chopper coming out to look for you!! The winner gets a photo of my 2.9 kg. mudcrab caught in Raby Bay.

safety tag missing to stop it turning on

it doesn't actually indicate which way the dial should turn for "test" and "on"

if the tab wasn't there i'd probably have turned it "on" to "test" it out - a little counter intuitive.

IMO, there is nothing wrong with it.

The safety tab is still in place which means the unit can not be accidently set off.

The switch can be set to test as per normal, giving an indication of the units power & transmission ability, yet not actually tansmitting when in test mode.

OR by the looks of it, the safety tab can be moved to the right, thus allowing the unit to turn on, even though the tab is still in place?

The saftey pull tag is the wrong way around - it can be slid to the side & the appliance switched on, without removing the tab. Poor design the way its made anyway - that & the fact that the switch covers the position it is in unless the switch should be 180o around & there is an arrow or a locator window we cannot see on the other side

Wrong question Ian. It not a matter of how observant people are, but whether they know this particular model EPIRB or not. In my case, I don't, so I can't [smiley=help.gif] you.

Is it a GME MT300 ?

i reckon chris is partly right.

the switch obscures the word "off" or what ever function it is in at that time.

the operator should be able to look and see what function the unit is in. not figure it out through elimination.

The safety Tab is off a different Epirb , smaller fit , prone to easy dislodgment
That and the fact the saftey tag doesn't cross all the way

The safety tab has been removed and then replaced with part of the sign "PULL TAB TO BREAK SEAL" tucked under the tab so it can't be read.

Got me stuffed and I have gone away and read the damned manual. Guess I failed my proficiency test.
Here is part of the manual showing settings for test and activation.

The seal has been broken, the unit has been used. Maybe enough that the battery is dead

Some pretty smart guys here on this one! Most were right insofar as the "sticky" yellow tape that stops that stupid little tab being pulled out has been broken off and is still partially visible. In actual fact all that is holding the yellow tab in its present psoition is two tiny 2 mm posts. It can easily drop off and then it is just a matter of someone/thing moving the on/test switch the wrong way and off it goes! This was too easy, havta raise the bar for the next one! CAVEMAN was spot on with the type of EPIRB and picture of the way it should look! Here is the prize, big muddy from under my pontoon in Raby Bay.

Blaze, Replacement in 18 months might be worth looking into a "new " 406 as if one does the sums against the 121.5 termination dates then the considerations are

New battery and check? what around $140 (or so) and if done in 18 months time then you'll basically have a battery life of 5 years but only 3 years left in the system (shutdown Feb 1, 2009).

Buying a new 121.5 Epirb now, the system will be shutdown before the battery even expires and then basically becomes a throw away item.

Buying a new 406 before December 31, 2004 qualifies for a $100 cash back for any (model) 121.5 Epirb (working or otherwise) returned. So for anybody with a 121.5 that either needs a new one or a new battery in the short term the "overall " cost to jump to the better 406 is a differance of between 250-300 bucks for a unit that will take one past the 121.5 shutdown.

But then in 18 months time 406's could be cheaper than they are now but then they might not either.

Cheers, Kerry.

how much are the new units going to cost
