Reef fish guide now online
The popular Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries (DPI&F) Reef Fish Field Guide is now online, giving fishing enthusiasts, students and others quick and easy access to Queensland’s iconic fish species.

The Reef Fish Web Guide can be found at the DPI&F Fishweb site at www.dpi.qld.gov.au/fishweb and contains all the full-colour images and information outlined in the manual.

The web guide is easy to access and use and features images of the fish listed under the Fisheries (Coral Reef Fin Fish) Management Plan 2003.

It also contains a glossary, guide to fish markings and parts and supplementary information for commercial operators.

DPI&F acting education officer Jason Smith said the information would help anglers and commercial operators to comply with important fisheries legislation.

“Like the manual, this is an identification tool to help fishers recognise the fish they catch and identify no-take species and other important reef fish,” he said.

“The fish have been grouped into families with similar species placed close together to help the user recognise the differences between them.”

Mr Smith said anglers accessing the information on the web site would also have direct links to the recreational fishing regulations.

“The information is right at their fingertips if they want to check the fishing rules in relation to the coral reef species,” he said.

“All the recreational fishing regulations are online and available in a PDF format for people to download and take with them.”

Mr Smith said the Reef Fish Field Guide was originally designed as a reference guide for anglers and commercial operators but its popularity had spread.

“The manual has been very popular with students, schools and the general public so it made sense to put the information on the web site for everyone to access it,” he said.

There are still hard copies of the Reef Fish Field Guide available from local Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol offices or the DPI&F Call Centre on 13 25 23.
