Well I used to think it was crap, but I got good. Every time I tried to log in here I got a search screen and every time I tried to reply on MSN I got a search screen. Many hours this weekend have freed me of this crap and hopefully will not be a problem again. Just a gentle warning, if someone wants to use your puter find out why first. >:( ::)

Yeh I had the same problem, in fact one of my mates gave me a disk to check for the LIL things that get into the system, I had over 100 probes and other things whilst I was running Nortons. My advice to all my mates is to get some thing that checks your software for spyware

Try Spybot Search and Destroy 1.3. You can download it for free from http://www.spybot.info/en/download/index.html
I have used this to remove the spies and dont seem to have any more problems

I thought Spybot has it's own little resident critters >:(, Adaware seems to be completly free of them.
Good to read you made it back Dasher.nq

I have had spybot for a couple of years on all our computers at home... works really well. When I repair other friends computers etc after they have picked up viruses, spyware etc I always install it for them... to my knowledge it has no spyware of its own built in.

One thing most people fail to do is keep up to date with their definitions for these programs including more importantly their virus checkers.

If you find that your spyware or virus checker has a problem PERMANANTLY removing the malware, run the program while the computer is in safe mode.
If using Win XP turn of the restore feature as it may assume it needs it to operate the system and re-install it all again on the next boot.

My microsoft update directed me to the ad-aware site. I downloaded and ran it to find about 130 bits and pieces that it recomended to quarantine. My puter runs heaps faster and does not drop out now.

I use both ad-aware and spybot regularly on my computer and have found that they both pick up different things. I recommend running both if you want to ensure your system is free of syware.

cheers,

I have run ad-ware since owning a pc and it usualy dose the job but not this time. I tried spybot but the tec said be carefull of what you remove out of the list. The other program i used was hijack this which the tec said the same thing about. I sent him copies of the q list last week so when he comes over he knows what he's looking for.

I use "spybot" "adware" and history kill. I also have VET, pop up killer and AVG antivirus software. All these programs run every day. I have not had 1 single problem with my computer. History kill is essential if you are looking at porn etc on your work computer.lol.... [smiley=computer.gif]

You could try using Mozilla Firefox, removes practically all your popup problems and it's a far better web browser than Internet Explorer anyway.
I also use Spybot, Kerio Personal Firewall and Trend Micro virus software. Spybot and Kerio are free and I get the Trend software free through work.
NOD32 is very highly regarded and may be cheaper than Norton AV for anyone looking to buy software.

You can also add spywareblaster to the list of must haves. I use adaware and spybot as well . In five years I have had no troubles. Take anything a computer tech tell you with a grain of salt. If everybody ran the above software and kept their antivirus up to date most techs wouldn't have a job anymore.

agree with Kingtin.

when I had to get rid of that Startpage worm? virus? that dasher mentioned as his problem at the start of all this, CWShredder was the only one that got rid of the rotten thing.
That was a long time ago, didn't know it (Startpage) was still around the place.
