Mike,

I've dived the 12's off the Gold coast before on an area which holds pretty good live. Almost always baitfish and the odd bigger thing.

Anyway the bottom was silty sand with ridges of exposed coffee rock but no real coral life. Pretty boring really but I had always wondered what was down there.

The 24's and 36's are a bit too deep to worry about just to go and have a look at the bottom.

This is what they look like from a Furuno 582l the reef the deep dark red the sand is the red on the right hand side which is less deep, the bait is slimies and there is possilby a billy on the right balling them up. Depth in Fathoms

I was told there was virtualy no visability after about 40 metres by a lot of people,my curiosity came about by me wanting to use non glo black jigs,so I started asking divers, one in particular who has dived all over the world and has dived to 70 metres told me that depending on the brightness of the day and water clarity 30 meters is prety common at this depth, she showed me photos of around 50 metres and although colour was restricted to shades of blue,grey/black and brown, features and fish were quite visable at good distances.

There is a dive shop in Brissie with a guy that specializes in deep dives. He mentioned one day whilst I was renting some gear off him that he often does drift dives on the 50 fathom reefs east for Southport. Mentioned that that the vis was great and the big Tiger Sharks used to come and check the divers out. I believe they would use a float on the surface attached to all the divers down deep who would go along with the current and the boat on the surface following them. From memory it may have been absolute scuba or something of the sort. He might have some photos of the bottom.
