I knew of calcarifer (barra) and niloticus (nile perch), but stumbled on japonicus which looks very similiar to calcarifer. Also found longispinus, stappersii, microlepis, macrophthalmus, angustifrons and mariae.

Anyone know much about the distribution of these?

The best on line source of specie data and searchable database I've found on the Internet.

Looks like a few of them are types of "nile perch".

I received this from a very well informed friend.

It is also known as the Japanese "barramundi"
and is pretty much the same fish as ours.

It is limited (so it seems) to Okinawa - southermost island in the Japanese chain. The IGFA all tackle record is just under 80 pounds.

While not having been there, I've caught glimpses of rivers there while looking at combat cameraman footage taken during the closing stages of World War II.
The water looks as it'd support barra...interestingly a specimen of Lutajnus goldeii aka Niugini bass also came from Okinawa.

Thanks Harro.
