My mate caught this down near Wooli, NSW. Can anyone let me know what it is?

Possibly a Wirra?? was it caught in close to the rocks?

REcipe for cooking Wirra -

place in a pot of boiling water with a rock.

boil until rock goes soft.

eat rock!

I wouldn't call it for a wirrah. the dots on the original are blue not brown and black.

By the way I saw wirrah for sale in the co-op the other week by some other name lol.

looks like the purple cod, not your every day catch anywhere, especially not there i wouldnt think

i belive they can take on the coulration of their area
that one in my pic was caught around some kelpie rocky area hence a dark coulor
the other one could of been caught over more of a gravley area hence the bluenessand then you can also have ones that have more redish orange marking that are over deep refiy areas
they are a preety fish that i'm sure has sucked alot of people into thinking they would be a good eating fish only to get a rude shoke ;D

I have caught one very similar off a Cairns reef. I think Mackmauler has got it right. The Grants guide to fishes foto i have posted doesn't do the fish justice as the one I caught was very blue as is yours. Anyway check it out.

The original fish posted has a much different looking pectoral fin than the purple cod above.

I'm with dicer, the blue maori is also one of the better eating fish of the sea.

hey dicer you sure you are looking @ the pectoral fin? Its pointing straight up and not laying flat so is very hard to make that call M8. I still reckon its a sub species of the purple cod.
