Hi everyone, i was just wondering if using live bait like mullet or yakkas out at the reefs improve your catch or is it just as good as using the old faithful. Pillies and Squid

Yep and get ready to hang on. Try a happy moment.

I suggest that you will need to have the Tackle to back up the livie as D2 has stated "hang on".

It is likely you will encounter the "unstopable" fish at some time or rather so it will pay to use good tackle.

What reef system are you refering to...your profile gives no hints ::)

I like using little fingermark or moses perch and pinkies the best. Fusilier also is a good option

Hey Mac
Live bait can make an incredible difference.
If we can't get livies, the catch is totally different.
A good example, yesterday we went offshore the best fish for the day was a big maori cod. Most of the day I spent tagging undersize red emperor. We caught hussar, parrot, grassies and 1 lonely nannigai.
A trip to the same spot with livies always produces big trout, moses perch, nannigai,
bigger reds etc etc.
I hate going offshore without livies!!!

Tony,

Now I hope you've organised for the schools of slimies to be floating up that way in a month's time.

Surely you would have pre ordered the live bait from king neptune ;D

When I first replied (under the name D2) I immediately thought of a local charter boat trip in Hervey Bay in Oct '03 where the fishers on the day had a great time using live bait. I have since located a pic of the result - nice fish.
