TOP PRIORITY FOR IMMEDIATE BROADCAST
SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING
for Damaging Winds, Large Hailstones
For people in parts of the
Southeast Coast and the
Wide Bay and Burnett forecast districts.
Issued at 7:15 pm on Wednesday 2 February 2005

Storms are occurring in a line stretching from the Bunya Mountains down to
Gatton and further south to the New South Wales border. Some of these storms
may be severe and may produce damaging winds and large hailstones.

The storms are moving rapidly to the east northeast at around 50 km/hr. The
line of storms is expected to move over Kingaroy, Laidley and Boonah within the
next half an hour and Murgon, Ipswich and Beaudesert within the next hour.

The storms will be brief, and may be followed by gusty winds and areas of raised
dust.

The storms have moved out of the Darling Downs and Granite Belt area, so the
warning is cancelled for that forecast district.

The State Emergency Service advises that people in the affected area should:

· seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees
· avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm
· put vehicles under cover
· secure loose outdoor items
· beware of fallen trees and powerlines

Contact the SES, listed under either State Emergency Service or your local
council in the White Pages, for emergency assistance if required.

The next warning is due to be issued by 7:45 pm

This warning is also available through TV and Radio broadcasts; the Bureau's
website at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 219. The Bureau and State Emergency
Service would appreciate this warning being broadcast regularly.

Know how you feel, our house got hit last year as well. Direct stike on the TV arial. Blew the arse out of all electrical goods, inlcuding the UPS for the computer. I queried why the UPS was damaged, reply was that there isn't any power surge equipment for PC's that will handle a direct strike. I can live with that. Lucky for insurance.

Hope you all made it through the storms OK. Seen some footage on the news of down south, what a devastation. Almost reminds you of the movie, 'Day after Tomorrow'.

I would go fluro, I have been scuba diving on the GBR during thunderstorms and it is amazing!

The lightning lights everything up! Just brilliant!
