Howdy All,
What are the most common line classes used for targeting barra?
Thanks
Glen
Glen,
Pre braid it use to be around 6kg but now that most people use braid it is now 14-30lb with 20lb being most popular. Remember if you use a braid line, set your drag to the line class of the rod (eg 6kg rod, 20lb braid = 2kg of drag.
Hope this helps,
Cheers Ian

Depends heaps on the conditions you are fishing. Some spots that have a lot of timber/heavy snags require pretty heavy line. I personally wouldn't go fishing for barras with less than 30lb braid.
If you err on the upper side with your line class, you can up your drag setting as long as you don't try to put too much bend in your rod. It is the bend in the rod that will break it, so if the fish is putting too much pressure on you, you can point the tip more towards the fish, and the line will take the pressure off the rod.
Also if you are fishing directly into a snag, you often need some pulling power to stop getting buried directly into a snag, especially if you get onto a big jack instead of the targetted barra.

All as above but I'd still use a 50lb mono leader

30 lb braid here, leader is 50 lb flouro. This is mainly for fishing in snags, and as said before you hafta turn their head quick if you want any chance of landing them...

I normally go for 20lb braid but it depends alot on the location and the technique being used. There have been times when Ive gone for the 3kg spin stick and other times with big overhead reels spooled with 50lb mono. Leaders are essential!
