After having caught my very first Squire on saturday in the much underated Brizzy river, I have a curios question. At what stage do you start to call a Squire a Snapper, is it a guess or a hard and fast method.?
Also being a Victorian I should be calling a Squire a Pinky.!

Squire become Snapper when they get a lump on their head.
Cheers
James
they are all born snapper... :)
it is just that some call smaller ones by a different name, instead of juvenile snapper, depending which state you are from.
as a kid i remember them being 'schnapper' not 'snapper' :D
to me it is a bit like your parents calling you ' one with a back that is a bit suspect when put under load' & when you turned 16 changing it to 'Dodgey_back' ;D
doesn't matter what you call them, they still taste great..

I think around about 3.0 - 3.5kg. It is suppose to be a term for a juvinile.

the only
the only reason they called them snapper was because off bag limits they did not want you to catch to many
son they call them all snapper was because off bag limit

now there's a point.. if they don't become snapper untill bump on head, 5kg, etc.etc can we keep 5 squire & 5 snapper :)

35 cm pukunui, was increased from 30cm a few years back now, and the bag limit is 5 not 10. This should give the average 35 cm fish ( 3 years old roughly)at least 1 chance to spawn, and help the snapper stocks to increase.

You idiots ;D ;D ;D
Snapper is the common name given to species "Pagrus auratus". It has many many colloquial names around Australia:- snapper, squire, pinkie, red etc
In Queensland Pagrus auratus has a bag limit of five and a size limit of 35cms.
They can live to 13-15 years old but don't become sexually mature until about 3. Given that snapper in their earlier 30cms are sexually mature and therfore 3 years of age; imagine how old some of the big fish we see on this site are.
Squire are snapper - snapper are squire - avoid the confusion and call all fish either little or big snapper.
