I spent some time sailing around the oceans on a 40' C&C sloop, we always had a line out the back attached to a winch. When we caught anything around the 15lb plus we would try and get a shot of rum down the buggers throat before lifting into the rather small cockpit, most of the time the rum knocked them out! When a guy told me about using this method i said yeah right but after giving it a go it worked, good thing when you have no room and are under sail. but i must say half the time the rum goes to neptune and the fish is thrashing like mad on the cockpit deck.... no we did not think to get a gaff, would of been helpful. One point i must make clear the rum used was the cheapest stuff we could get and it was often consumed regardless with fellow salts.

What a waste of rum! :-) Metho does the same job, particularly on crabs.

Yeah I agree with Kingtin, what a waste of Rum unless its that Bacardi crap cause that would be all its good for. Just gaff em and club em, if need be.

Cheers

I don't drink rum..only like it straight and it sends me aggro..but as they say..if you cannot fight on a belly full of rum you are a born coward.

Hi wiseguy67, I sailed to Noumea and back with 4 dozen 1125mm bottles of Bundy on board and the only thing that it knocked out were the crew! LOL
Found the winch handle to be a great pacifyer for any fish hauled on board.

Indeed !! Feed the rum to the crew and i am sure they will pacify any fish in no time straight ! ;D

on the subject of rum,......what the hell is going on with Bundy not continuing their vats of black label :-[ >:(
