Just bought my first fishing rod and I want to try lure fishing. #Don't want to venture too far from home for a start.

Any suggestions on land based fishing spots around southern Bay area that are not too hard to get to?

Welcome to the site.
Most canal estates hold some quality bream that readily take small 2-3inch plastics. If your lucky the odd trevally will also take a lure in there aswell. You'll also come across the odd school of pike. when fishing keep an eye out for small baitfish breaking the surface pushed into a corner. Cast your plastic into or to the side of the school and let it sink to the bottom then quickly retrieve it to the surface. repeat the process until the lure is back to the bank or you hook up. The pike will see the lure darting to the surface and take it on the drop. You can also try for some flathead using minnow shaped hardbodies and larger soft plastics around the mouth of tingalpa creek.

Try the ponds at the eastern end of Fishermans island where they are reclaiming some more of the bay.
Land locked and hungry, lizards, turd snapper, squire
Some excellent fishing to be had but the security guard's not real friendly and his dogs got a bigger problem
