What is the purpose of the ponds at the Hervey Bay Marina. #They don't seem to be doing a lot but they are fenced and restricted. #I was Talking to Michael ( Land_lubber) and he reckons they are silt ponds. #Are they silt Ponds??? #Here is a pic with a couple ponds in the background.

My guess, from seeing similar setups elsewhere, is that they are reclamation structures. Townsville, for example, has a Casino sitting where there used to only be water. They built rockwalls around the area and over a coupe of years or more gradulally filled it in and reclaimed it as land. I have seen some sensational fish rescued when the last bits of water are pupmed out.

I am sure BigDan123 told me that they are silt ponds for dredging.

What is the purpose of a silt pond??? The ponds didn't seem to hold much except some descent fish as mentioned :-/.

The ponds are there to pump the silt into when the Harbour is dredged

Yeah ya spot on Mark. They were originally built for dumping the spoils from dredging. Somewhere along the line the guy doing the dredging and the powers to be couldn't agree on whatever??? So the result is no dredging. Rumours are rife at the moment about them being filled in and built on but a lot of ifs prevail. Not easy to get the services out there that would be required for a casino. :-? ::)

Probably end up as unit development the same as the other end of the harbour. Good thing, bad thing, I don't know. Can still remeber when there was only a jetty and a small rock wall there. Starting to show my age now. Just wish someone could design a better entance/exit to the boat ramp and car parking area. :)

It's a pity that Hervey Bay is getting so developed. #I was at Hervey Bay last December and was up there again this December. #The rate that everything is getting developed is a real shame because it is no longer the place it used to be. #I think in the long run it will ruin the place and it will become to commercialised :(. #

What do you mean it WILL become commercialised :-? It already bloody well is and getting worse. A few more years and it will look more and more like the Gold Coast.

Lady and the camping grounds told me they were settling ponds for the muck from harbour dredging.

Also deeply suspicious that once filled up will be "developed" probably units.

I mean more commercialised than it already is :(. I would hate to see Hervey Bay turn out like the Gold Coast but unfortunately I think its heading that way. I am with you Luc about being suspicious with those ponds. They really don't look like they are doing much.

Yes Mark, The Bay is becoming more commercialised and the growing number of unit developemnets is amazing. # Not that long ago the height restrictions on the Esplanade was 3 storeys, now the skies the limit ( apparently, only restriction is how much $'s goes into the council slush fund in a brown paper bag ).

One of the reasons I moved to Hervey bay, was the development. #Being in the building industry, pays to go where the work is. #BUT............The Bay is still a quaint little township. #

If you are not happy with the Bay, have a look at Burrum Heads, Toogoom, Dundowran, Craignish, Ninkenbah, Boral etc, #all large block, fertile, views, cheap and out of town...........jeez, sometimes it takes nearly 10 minutes to get home from town # ;) ::)

We had a major traffic jam the other day.................4 cars lined up at a round-about and it took me 45 seconds to negotiate it.

Take into account Fraser Island, Whale Watching, Fishing bay, reefs, beaches, estaury and fresh water, it doesn't get any better. #So the place gets developed...............it will happen. #I say embrace it. #Although I did not agree with the lifting of the height restrictions on the Esplande.

Packer and his mob are in town.................next step,,,,,,,,,,,,, Casino !

Where........................The old #Anchorage Cavaran Park is my guess. #Less than 10 years away.

Also #business's like Bunnings are here with others like AYE-Marty and BCF on the way. #

The lifestye of the bay is great. #Get into it !

CHeers......... ( fraser ) #Phill # ;) # #

I'm with Phill.

After spending a few days looking around, when I spend some holiday time there, I'll be looking towards Burrum Heads.
