Telescope enthusiast saves fishermen
Tuesday Jan 3 18:08 AEDT
Three fishermen had a lucky escape when a telescope operator spotted them by chance after their vessel capsized more than a kilometre from shore.

A man using a telescope at Woody Point, 100km north of Brisbane, spotted the trio in the water desperately waving for help.

The three 19-year-olds, from Brisbane, had been fishing in the area when their dinghy capsized about 10am (AEST) on Tuesday.

The men, who were wearing life jackets, were in the water for about 20 minutes before the telescope operator raised the alarm.

Water Police sergeant Warren Francis said the telescope operator had been more than a kilometre away on the mainland.

He saw the group frantically waving their arms around, trying to attract attention.

Water police were contacted and the three men were picked up and taken back to shore.

Police are not pursuing the matter further. No alcohol was involved.

None of the men were injured.

Any clues as to why the boat capsized?

Weather/wave, mishandling, inexperience????

I think kleinys reply would be rihgt as most of woody point -clontarf area would have been glassed out as n/easters are mosly offshore.

no wonder the water police are starting to lose thier sense of humour at least they had life jackets, used to tie a flare and whistle to my jackets .no good in a capsized boat.

May-be he was at Woody Point with a damm good telescope and they were 100km away. At that distance he must have had a damm big 'scope :o
