Hi,

I think the fish in the picture with the guy in the red shirt is an alligator gar. We have those in the Mississippi River. The armored, crawly thing in the last picture looks like a horseshoe crab. I've never heard of them being that big though.

Cool pictures!

Reckon you got that in one! LOL

"Horseshoe crabs, common along the Delaware coast, have evolved little in the last 250 million years. Still, they have survived because of their hard, curved shells, which have made it difficult for predators to overturn them and expose their soft, vulnerable underbellies. The horseshoe crab has also survived because it can go a year without eating and endure extreme temperatures and salinity".

Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year to you freezing people in Chicago. My mate is back there for Xmas but will more than likely head straight back to Asia on a photographic job rather than shovel snow off his drive. LOL

Hi All

The long eel-like thing is a ribbonfish or oarfish.

Yes that is a horeshoe crab - first photo is a trick one.

The "barracuda" is an alligator gar.

The catfish looks like a European Wels (frshwater catfish) but could be an American cattie as well.

That Horseshoe crab is ONE COOL ANIMAL!!

They should make a horror movie with Sigornie Weaver about those things!
Thanks for the great post ..... I love this stuff!

The catfish is not the European Wels but an American cattie.

Horseshoe crab is a nice looking creature indeed.
I also think that the first picture is a doctored photo.

Hi Peter,

The barracuda/alligator gar creature, doesn't look like anything that swims in Australian waters. Although I may be wrong here, do you have more information? Just curious.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you too Hoges. I don't blame your friend if he does get back to warmer weather; it's currently 18 degF or -8 degC outside. Not so much fun to be out in and almost impossible to cast a lure in. Not to mention there is about six inches of ice on all of the lakes. ;D

Brrrrrrrrrrrrrr. C-c-c-cold! :)

Not so sure about the 1st pic being doctored. I saw a series of pics about these dirty big catties that the "good ol' boys" get in the states. Looked real to me. Perhaps one of our cousins from the US could set the record straight.

1st pic the catfish is a Mekong River Catfish from Aisa Near Laos.

Never noticed the top fin being so high in the other Oarfish pics i have seen, very pretty though:) Nice Pics!

Cheers

I reckon the catfish is definitely European or American; the giant mekong catfish is a very different looking fish.

The cattie pic is real, they catch them in texas by hand. They stick their fingers down a hole and wait for a big cattie to clamp down on them and then its a wresling match between cattie and "fisho" No b#llsh#t I have seen some awesome articles of guys doing this. They get big catties like that all over Europe as well its regarded as a top fish to chase.

The oar fish has also washed up on Australian shores over the past few years

Those cuttlefish would stink after a few days.

I always think of those poor people in their million dollar beach front homes ;)

I think I'll stick to the old rod n reel method thanks...

the 2nd photo does not seem right if you look to the top left side you will see a tri-pod and it seems to be bloody high off the ground....

good pic's but....
