I have had the unfortunate experience of getting caught in a few storms in my time.
Just wondering if anyone has any pics of approaching nasties.
I can remember seeing a waterspout out of Mortern when I was a kid..... anyone got one on camera?

The attached shot of a downburst I took on land. Apparently very dangerous for light aircraft.

Fizzed less than 1 km from us, the wave on the right must have been 15ft high.

that's scary stuff onerabbit.

Here's a storm out Warwick way. It was really 2 storms coming from different directions and they both
completely missed my farm. Not a drop. :(
It was in the middle of the drought in the late 90's

I have a pic of a killer looking storm over Brisvegas taken from out the front of the Hornibrook Hwy Bridge looking back t'wards the city. The approaching storm cloud looks like a massive tsunami wave about to destroy everything in it's path.

Unfortunately I have no webhosting service so if anybody else could host the pic pls let me know and I'll send it across :)

Here's a nice little super cell that came across brisvegas late last year. Took this shot at chermside looking towards the tax office. It was incredible to see the speed of this sucker. If you ever see one of these coming across the bay and your still out there make sure you take cover. The wind behind this one was cyclonic...

The aftermath....best rainbow I've ever seen. Wish I had my wide angle lense with me. It was a perfect rainbow.

Here's a shot I took on Christmas day last year. I had the camera set on burst mode while I tended to my video camera. It was happily taking shots and I came back and scrolled though and found this one.
Now I know a few people are going to think that I doctored it with a painting program but no joke this lightning looks like it's coming vertically toward me. If there is anyone out there that can explain it would be much appreciated. I didn't hear a clap of thunder either.

Hi again. Many thanks Canoedle for offering. Email with pic on it's way to you. I think from the pics above posted by Fixation & Simonm that my pic and theirs are quite possibly one and the same storm but then again I took this pic round about 10 yrs ago now.

At the time I was fishing for winter whiting and tied up to the Green nav beacon just to the east of the Haughton Hwy bridge. When that sucker arrived the winds were so terrific that it bashed my boat violently up against the beacon and I couldn't untie the achor rope from it. Ended up having to knife it free. Later I learnt it's illegal to tie up to nav beacons...d'oh! The lightning shows under the cloud were pretty impressive but I couldn't capture them in the pic cuz I wuz bouncing around all over the place and kept missing the shot!

Cheers,
Dorado :)

onerabbit. The documentry they did a few years back on the Sydney to Hobart race had one of those twisters.

They sailed straight through the center .

Me thinks you will find that the "bolt" has come up from the ground and is making an arc to something near the house roof

Looks like its come out from the houses earth and up, i feel that the smaller bolts are a bit of an over lay of previous activity and the cammera hasnt "refreshed" quick enough. like the blur you get on the photos at night when you see cars drive by (the shutter open for longer)

You can really see how bright it is comming out of the ground there must be alot of energy there, that would have scared the bejebers out of me

Great photo hope this may put some light on it

Cheers

That bolt in Fixation picture is a discharge of static electricity, same thing as a normal lighning but on a smaller scale.

Happens when there is a strong wind, rain and a hot day.

The Van,

Cheers, happy to share em,
I've seen 2 & have heard of quite a few others, my oldst boy even reports having seen them from the school one day, I just asked him & he said that on the day they saw 5 or 6 over half an hour.

Maybe Ballina is "waterspout alley", any other locals seen any here ?

As for going straight through one.........., you'd want to hope your bilge pump worked !

Great Pic there Dr_Dan. Anyone ever seen a bolt real up close and personal before? I've seen one twice now myself at a distance of about 10 - 15 metres away, and lived to tell the tale ;D Awesome experience :o
