View Full Version : Podcasting Nugget's Show?

Once again, I have drifted off to sleep on the couch whilst listening to Nugget's show on 4BC. #:(

(Nugget, don't take any unintended messages from that. # ;D ;D ;D #)

However, not all of us will get up to listen to a two hour show at 5am or are wide awake enough to do that without drifting off. # ;) ##So the technology exists to solve the problem - podcasting. #Podcasting is where you download a program to your MP3 player or Ipod to listen to it at any time you like. #It is really simple because your computer downloads the programs automatically and when you plug in your ipod to the computer, it deletes the programs that you have already listed to and downloads the new ones automatically. #It does this using a protocol called RSS - Really Simple Syndication - and it is what it says that it is. And all free.

Thousands of podcasts are now available from around the world, including all of those wonderful programs on the ABC Radio National station like the Science Show, Health Report, Sports factor, Correspondents Report, Background Briefing etc. #You can find an explanation at http://www.abc.net.au/rn/podcast/default.htm

Now 4BC also does podcasts http://www.4bc.com.au/podcasts.php but they don't yet podcast Nugget's program. #I sent Nugget an email asking about this and he replied that they might podcast some special sections in the future but unlikely to do the whole show because it does not affect the ratings.

Well it may not affect the ratings because of how the ratings agency measures them but I am sure that the advertisers on the program would love to get their pitch out to a bigger audience anyway. #I suspect that the audience is relatively small (and therefore highly targeted) #because of the time of day and the specialised nature of the program so I reckon that it would not take too many new targeted listeners to make a serious impact on the actual listening audience in percentage terms.

So I have just sent an email to 4BC asking that they podcast Nugget's program. #If anyone else thinks that this is a good idea, the link to the 4BC "Contact Us" webform is http://www.4bc.com.au/contact.php #You can see the programs that they currently podcast at http://www.4bc.com.au/podcasts.php

Maybe if they get a bunch of email requests for the program to be webcast, it will happen. # :) :) :)

I reckon that podcasting is exquisitely ideal for a program like Nugget's, ie a loyal, specialised audience that listens to very word and who would listen to it if not on the day at 5am then at sometime during the week when doing other things like driving to work, gardening, mowing etc etc etc, even fishing.

Thanks for the suggestion charleville.
I have forwarded your request on to the General Manager, Program Manager and Promotions Manager.
As far as I know, podcasting an entire Show has not been done on commercial radio.
Maybe it's the way of the future?

Thanks for your interest.

Thanks Dave. #Well it has sure been done on the ABC. #I think that Philip Adams on "Late Night Live" said that 60 000 downloads of his program happened last week. #Something that he and the rest of the ABC are amazed with. #Of course that is a national show and the "poddies" are downloading it worldwide. #

However, the ABC started doing it as a trial. #Maybe 4BC could give it a #go as a trial and see what the response is. I assume that the show is automatically taped for legal reasons anyway so the incremental cost may not be very much. #The risk with a trial is that it may be just a little early in the product lifecycle for the fisho population but who knows.

For what it is worth, I looked at my alarm clock yesterday morning at 4.56am and said "Nah - I am staying here." #

Triple J do it for their Current affairs program in the afternoon "HACK" as well.

Haa - my alarm goes off at 3am.
ABC yes, but I haven't seen it done on commercial radio... yet.

I'm going to give it a push - see what eventuates.

Cheers
