Plum Point Canada… Jordan Applin of Shoal Cove was convicted for jigging salmon, fishing in a closed area, possession of untagged salmon and retaining over-sized salmon. He was fined $1,000 and placed on probation for three years and, during that time, prohibited from possessing or consuming Atlantic salmon and being within 200 meters of a salmon river. Mr. Applin must also attend any assessment, treatment or counselling recommended and write a 200-word letter of apology to the Salmon Preservation Association.

Geez, I can live with all that but writing a letter and not being allowed to eat the fish for another three years?

My brother has been in Canada for some forty years and they have more land right troubles there than we could ever live in fear of #in Oz!

Most streams have been returned to the North American Indians and apparently it is quite common for half a dozen of them to have total ownership of many many miles of rivers jam packed with salmon.

The fun bit apparently is that when the salmon are on the chew, behind the local schools, dance halls etc. is the secret meeting place where the "trading" is done. Not that abnormal 'cept those who attend are the local cops, the Firies, Ambos, the fishery guys, local townsfolk and all those who can no longer catch (or buy) salmon.

The traditional native hunting methods for getting a feed of salmon has given way to powerboats, square hooks (nets), explosives, staked nets, traps, dams and some sort of medicine/potion/brew that supposadly stuns the fish till they can be scooped up!

Everybody has a jolly good time and nobody knows nobody and everybody goes home happy chappies!

Wonder if we could do the same with mullet over here?

Hi TPP,
That's a real double standard, isn't it?
On one hand the authorities not only throw the book but the whole library on poor Mr. Applin and made an example of, while the Enforcement authorities trade illegally with the Native Americans behind the local school! How can the majority respect the law if it's not seen to be applied equally?
I wonder what the reaction of the population would be if the Police only breathalised left handed males with fair hair and freckles?

Mr Applin broke the 11th commandment: "Thou shall not get caught." In fact, the other 10 commandments only apply if you break the 11th. Just like any other law.
