My wife and her mate just returned from a week at Bulwer on Moreton Island.

Each day they were bitten by flying insects with black body and white wings, size between a mozzie and a sandfly and mostly swarming about mid to late afternoon.

Anyone know what they may have been?

these are called midges. Rather nasty buggers. They live on the beach and swamp areas, and they feed off detritis (eg. dead fish), animals or us. My mum comes out with 5 cent piece bumps throughout her scalp. When they bite me I come out with red spots with a clearing in the center, about 3 mm big, but without any inflamation. Their initial blood sucking is what hurts the most - for me, but my mums reaction is over a week long.

Use a normal repelent, or a repellent such as the detol based one mentioned in earlier posts (someone is bound to post it here), or a citronella oil mix (but don't get it on the hands if your bait fishing!).

That sounds like the answer mate, and thanks for the input

They had with them the homemade repellent and were only hit on the occasions they didn't have it applied ;)
