Well today's 666 and it's 6 days since The deckie and I packed in the fags.

Kids are at tae kwon do, deckie's gone to an Englebert concert (yes I know, she's sad ain't she?) ;D so I just sat down in the garage/den to make up some tackle. Dropped a swivel under the old sofa there and when I reached under for it, I pulled out an old roll-up that I must've dropped a while ago..........pure conicidence or is old Lucifer trying to tempt me? ;D

The first time we gave up about 16 yrs ago we bought our first "real" boat with the money we expected to save. We were pretty strapped for cash back then and the thinking was that if we got it on the tick then we wouldn't be able to make the payments if we went back to smoking. Fags or boat?......we loved the boat more than the fags. Managed 14 yrs without and never thought we'd ever smoke again ::)

Why am I telling you this?..........buggered if I know unless it's to keep me occupied whilst I decide what to do with the old manky roll-up ::) ;D

Watch this space to see if Lucifer wins ;D

You should be proud of yourself for even questioning it instead of just lighting it up.
I'm trying to work myself up to stop also.

Kev - As a now ex-smoker (Smoked for 17 years) before I quit, it is friggin hard! But it is possible to do... I still want one everyday, but it's a little easier now.

Do yourself a favour mate, stay off em. :D

If it gets hard, go out in the boat fishing without any ciggarettes onboard. That'll sort ya out

We need smokers around as I can never seem to remember to bring matches or lighter to light bbq or fires.
Getting hard to borrow them as everyone else is giving up the fags as well.
Hang in there mate.

Did that on Monday mate. Found myself reaching for one everytime I re-baited and put the rod down. I think that getting through that bit was the hardest, and to be honest, I know for sure now that I'll never touch another one.

It's true what they say, that you'll only give up if you really want to. I think that what's done it for me is the old "control" thing. I feel that if I'm yearning for a fag then I'm not in control and the fags are and I'll be buggered if I'm gonna let that happen.

Feels good.

Don't try unless you're ready Muzz. Failure once, makes it harder the next time round. If I'd've thought I couldn't give 'em up, I never would've started again.

Good luck for whenever you're ready to give it a go.

If you gave up for 14 years, one thing you realised was that it really is a pointless exercise.
When you smoke you can think of all these good feelings it gives you. When you don't smoke you realise who was kidding who.

Don't go back to it mate, that road only leads to pain and not just for you.

Hang in there Kev.

Mate, I'm in remission (12 months since diagnosis) after some pretty ugly treatment for the big C that was never going to happen to me. I'm now thankful for every day I spend on the right side of the grass (they gave me a 30% chance of surviving 5 yrs) - but the "need", that empty hole that is addiction probably never quite goes away for most of us.

The discomfort and the lifetime side-effects of the treatment plus the impact on your family is too high a price to pay for the minor alleviation of the personal "need" that is generated by that wicked weed.

So last time it was a boat- this time think about it as saving for your life.

My ex-flat mate used to smoke one rolly pack a day - the equivalent one pack of drum - yik!!

Bloody right we'll be visiting! Last time I was tempted was because I wanted to smoke. That want has gone now.......I'm resolved.

Hope things continue to improve for you Tony.

You're right about that "empty hole" though. In my case, I always did view smoking as a substitute for something, although I never knew quite what and even after I'd stopped for 14 yrs I could still be tempted by the smell of a freshly lit fag.........I negated it by thinking of the smell of a stale ashtray ;D

The deckie and I used to do about 40 rollies each when we were younger. We had a specialist tobacconist in our home town who sold all kinds of baccy......rope, shag, twist, flake and such. We used to mix 'em up 'cause we liked the smell.

Our favourite was one called "aromatic shag". I will refrane from repeating here what we called it:o ;D

Stay off em Kev, best thing you will ever do. I tried giving up about half a dozen times but it wasnt till I found out I was going to be a dad that I just decided then and there to give them away. That was nearly four years ago and ive never looked back.

Don't do it bloke, every time you give up it gets harder. I'm about to gird my loins for another crack at it, I've just had a couple of long periods without them as I cut back and the cravings are worse than ever. Still if you're 6 days in you've cracked the hump my friend good on you, just hang tough. If it gets too bad do as suggested go sit on your boat and take it out on some vermin instead.
I'm thinking this time I'll do some soft plastics therapy when the cravings are bad.

Interesting to hear your comments and I think we're all agreed that you can only stop if you *really* want to.

To be honest, neither me nor the deckie have ever had the problems that some encounter and I really feel for those who have difficulty. I think we find it fairly easy because we stopped at a time when we really wanted to, in exactly the same way as when we started. We started because we both knew that we could stop when we were ready to.

Shayne, good luck with it mate but from past experience, gradually cutting down didn't work for us. Cold Turkey was the only way we could manage it because in cutting down we sort of viewed it that there wasn't enough resolve there to stop all together iykwim?

Kev, forget that sh1t mate, you are better than that !!

I gave up 7 years ago after a few attempts, main reason was the doctor diagnosed me with Diabetes and vascular disease, I was only 32 :-[

Heart disease, cancer, double the chance of diabetes, now why the hell would you want to smoke that rubbish, and how expensive is it now ?

Nope, go buy yourself some new fishing gear & put that temptation behind you. Better yet, go enrol in Tae Kwondo with the kids, I've been doing it for 3 years now, lost 16KG, Doctor reckons I am in great health now and it's all good !

Good on yer mate for putting the crap behind you. I did enrol with the kids when they first started but the back went in the 2nd session.........I suppose I'll have to rely on the old piece of 4x2 for self defence ;) ;D

Ive just come back from visiting my mate in hospital, he has the big C and it is inoperable. I'll spare you the details, cos I dont want to lecture you, but its time in life to think about how the deckie is going to manage without you.....or vice versa.

Sorry to be blunt, but it happens that quickly, my mate is in his late 40s.
I really hope you make it, and live a long life. Its not too late, and you can do it.

Zyban worked for me, magic pills that removed the desire to smoke, and still no desire 7 yrs later. Best 20 bucks I ever spent. See your doctor.

Yes, the initial problem with giving up the smokes is weight gain, but it can be overcome if you use your melon and start doing some basic exercise

I started out by just walking, do a bit at 1st then keep increasing, I am up to 4Km now and do that 3 times a week, the dog has muscles on her poop now and it has helped me keep the weight down
