got up this morning and was persuaded by the wife to go for a day on the boat. Although it was a late start and a few rainclouds were hanging around, it was not long before we were on the water, heading to one of our favourite spots for a bit of lazing around, swiming, ect. This spot is called pelican banks and is basically a sandbar on steroids, and is showing at all tides. It is 8 km north of Hervey Bay marina.

Hey,

Very nice. I've done plenty up there in the northern section of the bay, it's time to trek south.

I'm heading up there tomorrow, boat in tow looking for places to go to run in the new engine. I need to put up about ten hours as soon as possable.

How long/far is it to go from River Heads to Tin Can Bay and back. I worked out about a 38NM trip each way. Would this be right? Would I be pushing it to do this trip in one day, or would you suggest a few days trip? How shallow are thesewaters on low tide? Anywhere i'm likely to run aground in a 5.3m boat?

Could you list a few places I might like to stop off for lunch or afternoon tea along the way?

I've got a new copy of Brownies, any other advice you would point out?

Thanks, and regards

Darren

P.S.

Nice cat. What sort of fuel consumption are you getting from the 140 Suzies?

My new motor is a single 115 Suzuki.

boatboy , i think 38nm sounds about right, and it is a great trip , there is plenty of places to stop for a look such as ungowa, garys anchorage ect. If you are pushed for time ,you will do it in a day, but you will not enjoy the area as much as if you did it in 2 , for there is a lot to see. Yes there is a lot of shallow water / sand bars around here so you are doing the right thing using a copy of brownies, because if you rush it around here , you will run aground. Tomorrow the tides are a high of 2.74 mtrs at 6:21 am and a low of .96 at 12 :11 according to hervey bay tide times. If you are going to stay overnight , make sure you take mozzie repellant because thay are thick around here at night.. but after all that mate, the trip is well worth it!! all the best!!

Hey Guys,

As mentioned, I did a trip in this area to complete the run in of my new boat.

Heres some pics.

This is a pic of the the wreck Ceratodus, located just south of Ungowa, where inside out turned around to head home. Seems it could be a decent fishing spot.

And my boat at anchor while we enjoyed morning tea on the beach in beautiful Garry's Anchorage.

It's a good and popular anchorage and campsite which is very well protected from all winds.

And the fuel wharf and takaway. They do some good fish and chips for a day tripper! This is located next to the above boat ramp.

And then we turned around and did the long trek back to River Heads.

good southern straights coverage boatboy 50. Id thought id expand to some photos of hervey bays marina for the first time visitors. The marina here is just large enough to contain normal traffic, but can quickly overflow with the holidays ect, so if you are venturing here for holidays, a early start is advisable, unless you dont mind parking a fair way off. We have 2 ramps side by side ,which are about 25mtrs wide, and seem to flow well, with everybody going as quick as they can........mostly...... These are all tide ramps, but on a big out tide it pays to have a spotter so you do not drive over the end of them(especially if you have a large vessel) for there is no chocks to stop you from going to far.

next is a pic fuel depo which is only 30 mtrs north of the ramps + water police station

I was there at easter. Must say, it is oneof the better harbours on the east coast.

Good ramps and facilites, and yes some of the best "rough" waters as seen in pics above #;) :P ::) ;D ;D
