This is underwater footage by Ian Banks shot off the end of the Seaway Nth wall.
What species of fish are they?
It's not as obvious as it first appears.

Not easy dave!!!!!!!! They do kinda look like tarpons, maybe a bit deep in the body for them though, Ox eye herring are a little different to Tarpon but don't think either of them school like that?? I noticed some markings on the tails, don't know if it was the light or markings. That makes me thing flag tail's.
will be interested in finding out wht they actualy are!!!!! :)
Cheers

Could almost be queenies or similar due to the tail shape

My first thought was tailor - and that is what most people would have thought I guess.
But a good look rules them out.
I also thought (for a brief second) mullet - but no not them either.
I didn't consider tarpon initially because I didn't think they schooled in numbers like that.
I am looking at the original hi res video so have an advantage over the rest looking at it here but to be honest I'm still not 100% sure.
I considered queenfish but the markings are not there.
After watching the original full screen footage many times I'd have to agree a member of the megalops family... but in those numbers schooled up like that... - interesting.

They have to be tarpon...
I have noticed they can be in plague proportions in the Southport Seaway in the warmer months...

from a spearos point of view, they turn to quick to be kingies or school AJ, there's a couple of fish to the side of the shot that turn on a dime

G'Day Dave,
Your right its very hard to see any real distinctive charistics,
Size is very hard to determine,
But would they be yellow tail (scad) or maybe Cowanyoung?

I don't think they are either trevally, yakkas or Oz Salmon...
I am still thinking; tarpon...
Any luck finding out what they are Dave?

Yes tarpon is the final decision.
A lot of experienced people have looked at it online and hi res and decided - definately tarpon.
Thanks all
