Dont know if this is an approriate board but i Just got back from a fish up my favorite creek and whilst i did not get any thing i saw a crazy looking animal that i called for a beaver but have been told that there is none of these in oz ( excuse my ignorance im from nz). it was about 2-3 feet long, black and had a long thick tail about half the length of its body, it was just sitting on the side of the bank and then walked itno the water and swam around for a bit with half its head out of the waterbefore clambing up the bank and walking of into the mangroves. Anyone seen such a thing?, im in hervey bay, SE Qld.

Fishermen and women really need to carry a camera around with them more often. Never know when you may need to take a photo. What you described sounds like a platypus but in the mangroves?

Most likely a native white tailed rat, or sometimes refered to as a water rat, ive seen a few in the mangroves and they do grow quite large...foxy

White tailed water rat. Very cool critters, but they can sneak up and pinch your bait.

Saw something that looked like it was chasing bait up grahams creek in gladstone one evening, but geez it was slow, we couldnt work out what it was, swam around for half an hour at least before swimming up to the bank and crawling out , it was only then then we realized it was an echidna :o

Are you sure it wasn't DeadlyDave. His tongue is only 5mm smaller than the Guiness World Record. He might have been doing his tongue exercises by swimming using only his tongue.

Lucky guy can pleasure two women at once with it! HaHa ;D ;D

P.S. Here is a photo.
