I live near a lagoon which is full of mullet and garfish. I would like to have a go fly fishing for these. Has anybody fished for these and what did you use.

I've flyfished at the pine river dam for the freshwater gar and its great fun.

You can use either about NO16 back or green ants, or flashback nymphs.

Muck around with different patterns and you'll get different and good flies.

Mind you...i haven't tied the ones that ive caught them on (were given to me) but I've caught at least 25 or so freshwater gar in about...2 hours or so. They just attack it like no tommorow.

Nev, I the purist fly fishers will probably disapprove of this idea but it is worth a go if your sole objective is to catch fish.

Berley the mullet with bread, then use bread on a small undressed fly hook attached to floating leader. I can guarantee you'll get results!
