Hello all, I am interested in getting involved in saltwater fly fishing and am wondering if anyone has experience or knowledge of the Alvey 425B or 425BE fly reels, both models are 10 weight and retail in the range $159 - $199. I would be keen to read suggestions of alternative reels in a similar price range.

I've got a 425B & found the following:

- tough reel, virtually indestructable
- a tad on the heavy side
-good line capacity, 500 yrds 50 lb Bionic Braid + line
-Aussie made
-adequate drag for most situations

Reels in similar price range? Not sure on that one. Does depend upon your local dealers mark-ups.

Cheers,

Fitzy..

Warren,
Bought an Alvey some 6 months ago. Like Fitzy said tuff as they come and heaps of line capacity. I've been mainly using mine chasing the longtails and Mac Tuna in the bay. It's worked tops so far. Haven't had the luck of being stretched by a longtail but caught a few Mac T's.
Other reels I looked at with the same sort of capacity were at least double the price.
I got mine through Ausfish. Happy with the service and happy with the reel.

Hi Guys

The only issue i have had with the alvey is the weight a little heavy.

But an excellent reel for the cost and you could probably spend more money on backing.
