Lachie,

Would have to be Yamaha. Currently have 115hp saltwater series, and is definately the best.....so far. Previously owned Johnson's, Evinrude and blue band Merc (black anchor!)

However, mate has 150 EFI Merc (2001) and I must say I'm impressed. Last trip, out from Reddie bay to Goat, Peel, Harry's, Peel, Blakesleys, Macleay and back to Reddie Bay for only 30lt of fuel!! Boat is signature 1750l. Dam fine motor, turn the key started first time all day, with no muckin' around with choke or pumping fuel lines.

Cheers,

For Price, Reliabilaty, Service from a huge dealer network, and Quality of a huge product range, YAMAHA gets my vote.
I have my second Yammie now and this one is as good as the first.
Thats what I rekon anyway Reel.

I love my new Yammy 60 HP 4 stroke but prior to that I'd owned 4 Merc's.

The last one (75 HP)was the last straw. One stator coil, the oil tank low level failed, then started to leak, water in the gearbox 3 times, coil, trim sensor all failed in the 7 years. The last straw was when a bloke told me that 1995-6 Mercury/Mariner trim/tilt had no spares and a new one was $1300. All the problem I had mentioned were common to the model and some owners had their electrics fixed as a recall. I wrote to Mercury and never even got a reply. >:(

When I got towed in up at at Sandy Straits, the Coast Guard boat had a motor similar to mine on the training boat. Their big boat had a broken crankshaft and the this boat was going poorly. All had Mariners.

But our 1997 15hp Merc has done a million miles, and has even been 20km offshore.

It was the service and the back up that I hated.Yammys and Tohastu's
for me.

Davo, sounds like a familiar problem with the mercurys. ::) >:( We used to have a 75 (95/96 i think) and it was just trouble all the time. ::) I used to like the merc's but have gone off them well and truly now ;D.

Cheers, Lachie

hard to say, there is so much badge engineering going on these days; labeled one brand, made by another.

I voted for ' other'.

Meaning that I like the one ' that's starts every time and gets you out and back ".

Having said that, the present Yammie has been 10/10 so far.

The mariner ( see Merc ) shat, and the old Johnno went till a really bad knock appeared........sold it then, didn't want to wait for the bang ! ;D :o ::)

Since I've got the Yammy 4 stroke I've converted my dad. He'll have 2 by the end of the month. A 6hp Tohastu on the Porta-Bote and a 60hp Yammy on his new AMM 4.5 m.

We're looking forward to comparing the Fisher with the AMM. My mate is the next. His old 90hp Evinrude just expired and he wants to come out and try the 4 stroke. He's looking at either 80hp Yammy of 75 Honda.

Can I change my vote I rang up for a quote on a 115 carb Tohatsu and it was even more expensive than the Yamaha. All the motor brands are so good these days the only tangable thing separating them is price, my vote goes now to Mercury. NQcairns
