Hi All,

I am thinking about buying a portable GPS and was after some feedback on your experiences in regards to features, value for money etc.
I had a look at the new Magellen Marine and the features it had looked pretty good but the salesman was not very convincing.
He couldn't tell me if I could download maps from the net or where to get more maps and not knowing much about them myself it is all a bit confusing. Any sort of help would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Stu.

Hi There,

I've had a Garmin GPS12 now for 4 years and love it.

Its simple to use, accurate and with a $25 cable and some free software you can hook it up to your computer to download and upload waypoints and routes etc.

Garmin support is also top notch.

Cheers

Wayne

Thanks for that, might head down to the tinnie and tackle show this w/e.
If last years is anything to go by they should have a good range there.

Hi Stu, Iv'e been opperating a Garmin GPS126 for about 3 years and have some software that I use to update the info. You can't go wrong. I had access to a large format scanner ie A0 and scanned the whole chart and have overlayed this into the program that I run. I use the trackback a lot as I can massage the waypoints and make the whole thing more friendy fro when I'm out side. Any other info please email me

Thanks again,
Like I said in the initial post, the hardest thing to find out is what each unit will do straight out of the box and how much aftermarket software you then have to buy to get it to do what you want.

For example from what I can gather, a new Magellan marine unit + a few maps that you need to download and you are looking at $2K.

All of a sudden a GPS doesn't sound like very good value.
