Starting to get serious [smiley=mean.gif] about replacing the old 40's, and want to look at comparisions/ specs on the different species of outboards.
Anybody got any sites that would help. Looked in boatpoint and got a couple from there.
Very open minded at this stage [smiley=scholar.gif]

..Krazyfisher, that was the idea, thought there would be some internet sites who have done the tests etc.
I don't think I can justify the four stroke at this stage

They're all great when going good Gav.
But as for the four strokes, once you have one you will never look back, (quiet, no smoke, good on juice, and low on emissions). This is the way of the future.

I have just in the last month gone through the which motor thing in the 40-60hp range I recon always go for max power. And if it was not for the money I would have gone for 4s but 50hp 4s was $8100 for honda and $8600 suzuki/johno got a tohatsu 60hp 2s fitted with fuel filter, battery isolater and prop of choice all fitted for $7000 which also will be converted to 70hp for free(only a stopper and timing change needed) as for fuel 100km round trip 44l of fuel cruised on about 47kph, this is my 4th tohatsu for some reason just can't find a reason to change never had a problem I have had a 15hp,40hp,50hp and 60/70

I think that also a big consideration is the dealer. Is the dealer close by and does his service department have a good reputation. No point in getting a bargin and have it serviced by ningnongs that will end up costing you and arm and a leg latter.

I agree but also remember you dont have to get the motor serviced where you purchased it from

I am finding it a bit hard to justify the extra on the 4 stroke motors as the hull is early eighties, I have already spent a heap on the stainless, electronics and the general fitout. I promised myself not to over capitalise, unfortunately that hasn't happened.
I had a look at the Tomatsu's and they sound OK, but I am a little wary about the price being a fair bit cheaper than the competitors. I have always believed you get what you pay for...
Anybody got any comments.

I haven't ever heard anything bad said about the Tohatsu motors apart from a bit noisier and agricultural.

Thanks for the feed back, had a read of a test for a tldi 50. Sounds pretty smick. I haven't found a dealer on the sunshine coast yet to check the price out.
Krazyfisher, what sort of instrumentation do they have?

A work mate of mine has had 3 tohatsus mate and reckons he would never buy anytrhing else.As for the 2 versus 4 mate its money money money and the fact that you can leave a 2 stroke sitting around and it will start where a 4 wont. Whats the johhno 50 ..2 stroke worth now? tis a great motor with a great reputation .

Found the 50 tohatsu (77kg) was 5750 with the control box etc, the TLDI 50 is 8000, I've got to buy two of em, so thats 4500 difference. Now thats a fair bit of juice to save given that I would put 300 hrs a year on the clock!!
Just for interests sake, the 50 Yamaha (87kg) costs on average 6700. The Merc/mariner (93kg) costs around 7000. The Johno wasn't in it for me because it does not have the variable oil injection.
All Motors seem to get around 23-24ltrs flat chat and 8-10lts/hr at 4200.
The 40 stroke 50's start at over 8000, and are around 20-25% better from 4200rpm up.
70% of my life is trolling, this is where the 4 strokes would come to play.
At this stage I am definately leaning towards the Tohatsu 50.

Grunta,
What do you mean when you say that you can leave a 2 stroke around for a while and it will start where a 4 stroke won't? I thought it would be the other way.
