Hi all

I looked today at two runabouts a haines v16r and a savage escort , both not in too bad condition one had a 115 blue band merc , the other a 100 evinrude both around the same vintage .

My question is what you think of the older outboards and anything to look out for specifically, Also going to look at another with a 100 chrysler , Ive been told they are hard to get parts for and this worries me , does anyone have any advise to sway me one way or the other . This motor apparently has only 200 hours ?? and the boat is in corresponding condition its a nautiglass v150.

Any comments please

Its probably only got 200hours on it because it was broken for the rest of the time. While some people would have gotten a reasonable run from them I think most would say that they earned the tag of "great white anchor". As for the others, I think the Blue bands chewed a fair bit of juice, hard to say really without seeing them. Best thing to do is get a reputable outboard mechanic to check them out, it may cost a few bucks but it will be cheap in the long run compared to buying someone elses dog. Got to remember that they won't pick everything but will get a fair idea.

The nautiglass i could go for as for the motor nah, i had a blue band 150 on a cruise craft reef ranger, pain in the butt fuel wise and side plate wise. Looked at an older nautiglass v 150 last year with a new yammie 70 on it the damn thing flew and he wanted $7 for it, i didnt buy cause he was selling the motor on the hull. don't get me wrong the hull was okay but the price was wrong, considering, motor, boat trailer, safety gear, and electronics.

For that price Joe I would have bought it.

yeah 7 dosent sound too bad at all,

Found another one , a Savage again with a 90 hp yamaha 86' model , dont know about the rest but it sounds good ?

i might look at this one instead of the nautiglass ?

I have only heard mediocre things about the chryslers and im not sure i could live with an unreliable motor !

Well for $7 thou it sounds good but when you look at the state of the trailer, hull and electricals how much is the motor worth? How much more does one have to spend to get it up to where its okay? Savage sounds good they are a good hull as well.

Hi I looked into the same outboard, did a heap of research and walked away, they have got problems and costly ones - sideplates as stated above is one, when they are good they are very good, when they are bad they are very bad, the Yamaha is a better option allround but make sure it is a good one. Another option is the V4 johnson/evenrude crossflow or looper if you get lucky for the money your spending, they were very honest engines and if you buy a crossflow settle for 84 to 94 year models parts galore around for them they are very interchangable between HP. oh lurch i ended up with an 89 johnno the guys says over hauled rebuilt supplied the paperwork he photocopied it for me i took it to wynnum marine where the work was carried out, and they were only too happy to transfer the warranty. Turns out the motor is in really good nic and didnt need the work he said so i am happy, and the fiddly little problems I have had wynnum marine were only to happy to fix

Hi have you thought of buying a boat with a blown or damaged motor.Then get a good secondhand or reco motor of a dealer with a bit of a warranty so then you can be sure you dont buy someone elses problem.You might even get a small trade in if there is so quallity parts.

Had a look at some boats over the weekend.

The Nautiglass V150runabout was in exc cond . Hull and trailer great and the motor looked in fantastic condition for its age. but i couldnt go for something which has so many conflicting reports. it was going for 4800 so i suppose the price reflected the motor anyway. but to be confident with it i would have to change the motor so there is another few grand ?

The two Savage escorts i looked at were showing their age both have obviously seen many trips and also more than a few modifications to suit their owners . Both motors looked to have been poorly maintained with the evinrude showing plenty of corrosion, and the yamaha looked to have been beaten around a bit .

I also saw a seafarer V sea ( up close ) for the first time and i must admit to really liking the cuddy design alot , this boat was very sparse inside and could do with a good clean up but showed alot of promise as a fisher , with plenty of room for a 16ft boat. does anyone own or has owned this hull ? If so how do you rate it ?
Also the Nautiglass V150 Sportsman , also a cuddy design and of a similar length , although i am yet to see one of these up close so any information would be much appreciated .

Peter I have never owned a Vsea but have heard from owners of them that they are great fishing boats.

My brother has owned both, and both were excellent boats, however the for room the vc won hands down, both had their little annoyances, the vc with its rounded gunnels being particularly hard to get in and out, but you get used to it, and the naughtiglass would dig in and lean to one side in a following sea but you get use to that as well. Both don't need high hp motors to push em along. hope this helps

I went and had a look at 2 boats today that i have been eyeing for some time in front yards.

I wasnt sure what type they were , they both turned out to be Nautiglass hulls - one was the V150 Sportsman and as i said before i was impressed with the layout as i was with the V-Sea and for my intended use i think it would do me ??

The other was a surprise , it was a V170 Sportsman , I had'nt heard of these and again it was well set out really just bigger , this boat has no motor on it and appears to have been unused for some time , The trailer is not great and i'm not sure if it can be saved ?
But the hull looks to be in exc condition.

what size motor do you think it should have ?? (90-150)
and what would you pay for the hull only ??

Any thoughts ?

Hi i had a vc few years back top boat.If your tossing up between a vc and v15 nautiglass go the vc . my advice is get some of these boat in the water try them out for your self. then you will iron out the dodgee outboards too.see how they start in the water from cold,its a lot different then out of the water with a bit of tap water running through them.As for the v17 sportsman a 115-130 would push it along nice,when they first came out they probely had an 85 or 115 johnson/evinrude on the back.I dont think you would want to pay more than $2500-$3000 depending on the trailer, may be less, buy the time u put a desent motor,sounder,safety gear,rego and fix up the trailer u will be up for $10 000.

Thanks Dave for your reply as well as others,
I started doing the sums as well and i think it may work out to much to get it up and running again , it would depend what bits the guy has for the boat ?

I think i ill have to go back to my original idea of the VC or runabout type hull in OK condition and do as much work as i can to bring it up to scratch myself.
