i have a 27 mhz radio and when i turn my sounder on i get a pulse nosie through channel 88. i have the two systems seprate with each one powered by a different battery and the transducer cable is on the other side of the boat to the arial and the units are at least a metre and half away from each other.
any help would be much appreciated

just sounds like your picking up the echo beam from the trunsducer
if it isn't interfiring too much you can live with it but if not could go for a difrent arial

the interference is like the squelch is turned right up. a different arial can it be of the same as the one i am using or should i try different brands.

thats where your acauly better to speak to a comunication mob and not a marine shop i think a comunitation mob like strathfeild radio will fix it straght away they have instuments that mesure this kind of thing

when did this problem start up?
like have you had this same radio / sounder
setup working together with no problems in the past?

sounder off, can you transmit and receive normally?
if so, forget the antenna, it's not really critical for receive mode,
transmitting problems get your tx pwr / swr checked, probably not
for this sort of problem.

i'd be looking at the pwr supply, if the both units are actually supplied
by independant and isolated batteries it could be tricky.
but then most dual battery setups do have at least a common ground (-ve),

is it an alloy boat? that might be also be a common ground...

i get the same thing in my glass boat, and am lucky enough the
squech control can eliminate it nicely. only thing is i like to have
squech off when working the radio as weak stations calling can be
missed with it on.

btw, my radio is usually off, unless i need to call or are expecting
a call. yeh, yeh, all ships should try to maintain an 88 radio watch.
i like to conserve my batteries, more important to me when at sea.
don't worry, i still have the old mark 1 eyeball working. lol.

like aido I can squelch mine out. with the squelch really low it comes through. overridden when a strong radio signal comes in.

Bit like the car radio when you get away from strong stations, it starts to think the signal off the spark plugs is what you want to listen to and amplifies that.

Try the electrical interferance circuit button thing on your radio this generally eliminates elec interferance. The button is marked ISC and is next to the Dual Watch (DW) and 88 buttons on the front of the radio. Just press it and see if the noise goes away or like people have said just adjust the squelch.

Cheers, Lachie

The noise from the motor on my 27meg radio was so bad I had to fit a noise suppressor to the power supply. :(
