Hi all, I have just got my first QLD rego renewal for the boat trailer now it has ATM up to 1.02T? My Trailer has no brakes and is of the 750kg variety what does this 1.02tonne actually mean to me? Thanks nq

NQ, there is a weight limit on trailers at wich you will need to put brakes on it.
The higher the weight the better the brake type.(ie;cable, electric, hydraulic power, and they must be working)
The first step is cable override brakes.
It is important to check the towing capacity of the vehicle used.
This will be in the owners manual.
The tow bar will have a plate on it stating the capacity of the bar as well.
For a Commodore or Falcon there are three different capacity tow bars that can be fitted. (ie. the higher capacity are the more expensive, and braked trailers are required the higher you go).
Home made towbars are not legal.
Can cost you a fine, and occasionaly we do get the checkover blitz here in Brisbane.
And I can vouch that some people will tow a big boat with a less than adequate car and trailer.
I would suggest you check with the department of transport or a place that issues safety certificates.
Hope this has helped Kev.

Hi NQ,
It is about dollars. Trailers up to 1.02 tonne (weight of boat & trailer combined) attract a cheaper registration fee than those above this figure.
All trailers with a gross weight above 750kg must be braked.

So what is the actual GTM. Over 750kg's then brakes (effective brakes) must be fitted to at least 1 axle (if tandem). This is also irrespective of the towing capicity or unladen mass of the towing vehicle.

Cheers, Kerry.

Ok thanks for the advice but I am still confused ::), my trailer is the undoutedly the 750kg variety (no brakes) and was reg in NSW as as 750kg GTM? or ATM? (cannot find the old NSW rego papers now), all the paperwork I filled out for QLD stated 750kg, does the 1.02T mean that if i get checked and they disconect from my car and place the trailer/boat on some scales it would have to read above 1.02T before i am ticketed or above .750T before a ticket?. Or have they just stuffed up the paperwork? cheers nq

easy wyas to fix.
1. check weight on trailer plate ( for trailer weight ), add boat weight etc. or

2. take boat and trailer to local tip / weighbridge, get it weighed, if it goes over 750kg, you need brakes.

Remember, that when you go fishing you have tackle, full fuel, other stuff in your boat, and should you be pulled over by Dept of Transport, all that weight counts. so be aware of this when getting it weighed.

A gross weight of trailer, boat and the Gear you have inside the boat including fuel if 750kg or under you don't need brakes. If this weight is over 750kg but under 2000kg you will need overider brakes. If over 2000kg you will need a brakeaway system. You must also tow no more than the legal towing capacity of the towing vehicle as per vehicle manual.Of course the trailer must have a compliance plate to state the legal load carrying capacity of the trailer etc.

Ok I understand now, I must not go over .750 tonne because it has no brakes which is typical and the mechanical rateing of the trailer ie tyre, axle capacity is 1.02 tonne, if i put brakes on it today I could tow this particular trailer to 1.02T, cheers thanks for helping me get it straight one and all [smiley=2thumbsup.gif]. Strange they would state that and not the unbraked weight though?nq

hey fellas
does it mean brakes for when the boat is parked or brakes whereas when u press the brake pedal it activates the brakes on the trailer slowing it down further?
cheers jack

It means brakes that operate when you are towing the rig.
