G`day all,
Am looking to buy a second hand tinny around 13 - 14ft with motor and trailer for around $5000. Could you please give me any advice on what to get and what to avoid. Anything would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

i've been doing some reading up on boats and i think stacer have a boat about that size for little under $5000, or it could be a bit smaller.
or just check out the papers, or a few web sites.

Hi I know of someone in Cairns who bought a 14 foot deepish V tinny and 30hp evinrude + trailer for $1800 all in good condition . Most people seem to try to sell for up to 1 to 2/3 above what their boat is really worth and some get it too. You could get a basic 16+ foot tinny with a late 80s or early to mid 90s 40 or 50 - 60 hp for $5000 second hand and in good cond if you look around. What do you want to do with it, that will help with what to steer clear of.nq

16ft is probably a bit big, was wanting to hit the estuarys a fair bit but all get out to the inner reefs quite easily. I saw something in todays Cairns Post that would be perfect but couldnt get out to see it. 14' Clark Abalone c/console, 94 mod, 40hp evinrude reconditioned, Trailer, boat rego, some safety gear asking $4000 ono. Do you think something around that would suit what i want to do?

In a perfect world I think that 4.0m is just a tad small solo but still do-able, it may cut down on your time out or change your mind at the ramp or half way out. 4.3 to 4.5 would be the smallest to hit the reefs, I have an old 4.2 and it is great for the close stuff but just a tad to small overall when the lose reefs are around 27km + offshore, thats a lot of travel home in rough weather (dont forget those squalls we have been having lately). I will be upgrading the hull for a light 4.5 - 7ish version just for close reef trips, it will still do the estuary fine. cheers nq
Think about any extras you want to add to the boat like sounder, GPS, safety gear, bimini, battery, lights etc....they add up to quite a bit if you're not careful.
I bought a 4 M Horizon tinny with 25 Yamaha, cost me almost $1000 more to deckit oput with dsafety gear and sounder etc. Great boat but not very good on outside the bay. I'd look for 4.5 m or so and probably 40 to 50 hp if you can get it.
Something more to think about...hahaha.
Nomatter what boat you get, it's all good mate, fishin is fishin !
oops, forgot...make sure you get 13" rims or bigger, don't get those little boat trailer wheels...they're as useless as tits on a bull !

Have a mate who had a Abalone and reckoned that it was the wettest ride he had ever had. Sold it in less than 4 months for a Stacer c/console.
Just his opinion though

Here you go sounds like a good fishing machine ;D; in the NQ trading post thursday edition, Stessl 14ft 30hp 1994 model, 60lsstank with 20lreserve, sounder, all safety for offshore, ssprops, 12m rego, bow rail, carpeted etc $3500 email for number or grab the post. On paper I wouldnt pay much more than $2800 or $3000 probably but it would have to be very smick, offer $2200 as a start if all in very good condition and go to $2800. not worth much more than that, unless only used twice once on the muffs etc good luck.nq
