Question- do you have to have dealer service not to void warranty?

Recently got my Yamaha 100 4-stroke serviced by the local Yamaha guys in Kingaroy. This was a 450hr service but I am getting mine done at about every 150hrs because of the amount of trolling I do. Service consisted of new filter and oil, spark plugs and valve checking. Should have done the impellor as well but none was in stock. Bit more labour intensive than normal and cost $257 which has been my most expensive service on it yet. Spark plugs were some ridiculous price each but going on what guys are paying down in Brisbane I am real happy with them and the prices they are charging.

What parts did they list on your bill? Have heard the spark plugs on the fuel injected 2-strokes are pretty expensive.

Just had my 60hp EFI Merc done at Wild Marine at Burleigh, it was only the 20 hour service, but i think it was $120 plus parts or something.. i'll check when i get home.

You would think with technology these days that motors would need to be serviced less and be cheaper to service... unfortuatly not :(

My previous engine was a 40 hp Mariner 2 stroke (4cyl). Servicing was around the $300 mark at the old Cleveland Boating Service.
The going rate for an outboard mechanic (at a dealership) is $55 - $60 per hr !!!! So while your motor is still under warranty expect to be paying this for Labour costs.

Judging by what has been said above, It pays to shop around !!!

Smithy, Do they service Merc's where you got your Yammie Serviced ?? That's a lot better than the $500 - $600 i've been quoted so far :o :o

Cheers
Craig.

Not totaly sure about the average guy owner but any marine mechanic can do it all any brand any size. Same go for vehicles etc. I think an owner can do routine stuff like 4st oil/filter change and leg oil. Not sure about impeller. It's all just such a crock of logs, anyone with a 1/2 days training can do what they do for a routine service, unless there is a scheduled timing change needed. I would like to know more too.nq

this persistant windy weather is a great chance to do some
boat/outboard maintenance. i'm impressed with the way
most guys here take it seriously and actually get it done.
safe boating guys.
may your motors roar forever more.

Strictly Yamaha but will do small motors of any brand and configuration up to 25 or so. It is just that they don't want to carry many parts.

Heres what I think....

Most dealers will give you a rough estimation of cost before the service. Therefore you know what your in for. As for engines in the warranty term, I would always go to the dealer who sold the engine. Loyalty may be a thing of the past but at least when a problem or warranty issue arises, they have no way to back out or pass the buck!

As for mobile guys..... If something goes wrong, do they have the backing or insurance to cover themselves as well as you and your boat?

By the way is the problem with the labour cost or is it the parts?

I dont think we understand that labour is more than the hourly rate the mechanic is paid....Gst, insurance, rent, electricity, retail/account staff, etc etc etc..I think $60 per hour is cheap..

I just recently had my 100hr service on my 130 Honda. $480 total. Not to mention, a full detail was done inc touch ups on outboard and two rego stickers replaced (custom cut). I guess you pay a little more to have quality service. Its more than just an oil and plug change!

$290 for 100hr service on ReBaits 130 Honda, inc new Cav filter.

$55 / hr labour.

New plugs due in 2012 ( that's the year they're due ). ?

Getting up around $500 for servicing on outboards seems pretty expensive to me. Just spent the weekend on a 26' Blackwatch which had just had its 230 hp diesel serviced costing $660. That was with labour of $60/h and an impellor which was $103. Service included filters, oil changes, GST etc.

Damons33,
Is your guy in Shailer Park a mobile guy? If not where is he based? Do you have his number? He'd be nice and local for me. [smiley=2thumbsup.gif]

just had 100hrs service done on my 40hp 3cly, yamaha with a new impellar total $383.75 at sundowm marine.it makes you laught when you read the bill , eg, oil disposal, everything down to last detail. a lot to be said to a good mobile mech.biggest problem is when you take your rig to be serviced they advise you to take out all gear you dont want knocked off .dont get me wrong i'm not saying they steal anything but if you leave your boat beware. a lot said in favour to the mobile that comes to your place.

$60 an hour for a tradesman is a good rate.
Oil disposal charges..same as tyres..Govt grab for more money..can also tell of other products where the Govt has fees on them.

$300 4 labour rather expensive, no mention of any extra work carried out. A 200 hr service is a major birthday 4 a new motor, ie 24 mths.
Having just had 1 completed recently @ a cost of labour $180 - part $270 . which incured these procedures...
Check compression , remove, clean & set carby's, remove leg replace water pump, i replaced water pump as next service is in another 100 hrs/12mths. Replace spark plugs , gear oil, grease propeller sharfts, Remove heads & replace anodes(130hp yamaha 2 stroke), check thermostats.
These were carried out by a local guy at Ballina, that also services most pro boats in the area...............
So $500 spent does'nt take much at all , but $300 labour -$200 parts seems visa-virsa...............
Anyway safe motoring [smiley=2thumbsup.gif]
CHEERS!!
