Hi,
# I am thinking of repowering my boat and would like some advice on todays outboards. I currently have a 150 HP 2 stroke, 1991 vintage, powering a 6.1m Tri hull (hydrofield). What would be a the range of HP that would suit this boat? Are todays motors more powerful/efficient? ???
Cheers Budgie

Over powering a Hydrofield is a waste of space as they simply aren't designed for it. Assume this 6.1 is a Jaguar the maximum rated HP was 120 single or twin 70's and they really don't and didn't need any more HP than that.

Cheers, Kerry.

i would have to say that a more modern motor is defintly stronger faster and more eficent than the older modles :)

Budgie, Kerry is correct.
Twin 70s is ample for a 6.1. Jaguar.
Single donk a 120, 130. will do the job.
There are a few 6.1s running around with twin 90s.
When they built the 18SF they used twin 90 mercs on their
demo model. IMO new o/bs are stronger than ealier models.

cheers.

Thanks, I am looking in the 135hp area and was concerned about underpowering the boat. When you look in the fishing mags everthing around 6m is powered by 175/200hp. Hard to find any info on earlier hydrofields(max hp, max number of passengers, etc) Now is the time to compare makes!! Cheers Budgie

135 HP is certainly not underpowering a Jaguar 18 and as I've previously the MAXIMUM recommended for the 18 was twin 30-70HP or 115/120HP single maximum as per the specs. The 18 does well with a single 90, with some around here running 130 4S's but really from a practical viewpoint why anybody would want anymore than that is beyond me. #

Bare hull weight of the 18 is 660kg so any comparison with so called other 6 metre boats should take this into account as well as the design and maybe even ask the question do these "other" 6m boats actually need 200hp #???

Oh BTW the MINIMUM HP (from the specs for the 18) is 10 HP #:-X

Cheers, Kerry.
