No, the GP30 or GP35 (or replacements GP31/36) are not mapping units and don't support maps of any type.

The only data that can be uploaded/downloaded from the GP30 are waypoints and routes but only as a block transfer (not individual waypoints etc) and only using some specific software written specifically for the GP30.

Cheers, Kerry.

i've got a furuno gp30 navigator.
while its a great unit for doing what its designed for
it seems impossible to upload any map to the plotter.
i'm working on using the rs232 output to link to my
laptop via a serial to usb convertor.
should run me around around my satellite image file
or chart scan on the laptop quite nicely.
not sure how long the laptop will last in the boat,
so i think a compaq ipaq pda might be the go.
maybe running oziexplorer ce or similar.

people may say why bother, get a color chartplotter
for around $2000 with the map cartridge $$$.
well its the challenge that interests me.
i reacon a pda would be quite robust and suit
my boat where water won't be a problem.

now, does anyone know if i need a sofware driver to
run my dolphin usb to serial adaptor into the laptop.
i'm getting jack $hit when i try to transfer data from
the furuno to the laptop (compaq 2815) using any of my
programs, gps util, oziexplorer, or wingps pro.
just got this adaptor this afternoon.
as usual, nothing works out the box.
gawd i hate computers.
4800 baud
8 bits
1 stop bit
no parity
x on, x off enabled
no joy yet, sheesh...

www.dolphinmaritime.com/access.htm says

"The adaptor is powered by the USB port and supplied with drivers on CDROM and instructions."

you should have a CDROM with the drivers on it

The Dolphin USB-Serial adapter should come with the drivers on a mini-CD. The drivers I believe are provided by FTDI Drivers (http://www.ftdichip.com/FTDriver.htm) but download with caution knowing exactly what you are looking for.

By the way it does work (if installed correctly ;))

GPS Util does support the Furuno 30/35 & 31/36 (and some other Furuno's) as long as it's the GPSU-XF edition (3.99.4 or latter) and only for upload/download of routes and waypoints.

Oziexplorer does not support Furuno directly but there is a utility Download Furuno Utility Here (http://216.218.220.254/utils/furuno.zip) that will download/upload a Ozi compatible file format.

WinGPs Pro, nah give this a miss. Rather messy for uploading/downloading as it will only upload to a Furuno but mainly more a moving map type system using NMEA. Even to upload/download Garmin etc one must re-configure specifically to handle GRM/GRM protocol.

For the GP30/31 etc I'd try THIS SOFTWARE FOR THE GP30/31 (http://members.rott.chello.nl/cbeekhuizen/index1.html)

Handshake should normally be NONE.

Cheers, Kerry.
