View Full Version : Corrosion on power plugs

I have a recurring problem with power supply plugs to echo sounders corroding resulting in unreliable power supply to the sounder. The internals of the plug are brass, and they get a green corrosion on them. Would WD40 help once the corrosion has started? Anything else of any use?

Thanks

Not sure if the same thing but i have a similar problem with the trailer plug on my boat trailer.. squirted a bit of panther piss (WD40) into the plug and it worked alright... well it got the lights working anyway.

Caterpillar make a product called Dilectric grease.
It is a silicon based product that assists the electrical contacts and helps to prevent the corrosion as listed.
It comes in a small syringe type tube and the grease is injected into the female part of these type plugs before assembly.
Available at you local Caterpillar dealer.

Woooo enough of the WD40 [smiley=thumbsdown.gif] forget it, something like Vaseline and especially with some of the o'ring water proof type connectors.

Cheers, Kerry.

could be a case of black lead corrosion.
named so because it seems to affect negative wires and
connections more so than positive ones.

if you can pull the connector apart (doubtfull if its moulded plastic)
you might be surprised what you find. if thats too hard, slice the
cable insulation back a bit from the plug, nice shiny copper? probably not.

if you are electrically minded,
get a decent ohm meter and measure the resistance of the power lead
and earth from the connector back to the busbars. more than a few ohms
indicates problems and the resultant voltage drop and reduced current
carrying capacity of the wires will cause dismal performance of the sounder.

even worse is corroded transducer wiring, the output will be low and the
return signal next to nonexistant.

if in doubt, replace the wiring and connector harness.
reel hards grease is good, another real good one is
dow corning dc4 compound

To simply rectify the issue either turn your batteries off when you are home ( thats if you have a switch ) or maybe install a quick disconnect battery connector if you have a single battery. Or put a switch in for your electronics that you can turn off.

guys there is only one product i know of for this application LANOTEC in the spray. Its made from lanolin so salt water /air will not break it down .We use it at work on all our electrical connections its good stuff.
