just a quick one - how big do the boat identification numbers have to be on the side of your boat? Is there a minimum height rule for letters?

I'm not sure on the requirements by law, but I would assume that their would be... You can buy the stickers from Bias Boating pre-made, and these would have to meet any requirements... I'm assuming you are looking at making your own...

Any marine chandlery has them and the right advice. About $1.50/ letter.

Ive got customs on my boat, aslong as they are 8" high and readable from 30 meters away, you'll be fine

Tim
p.s. the black rego stickers u get from a chandlery should be about 80c a pair..

thanks guys - yep have a mate with a vinyl cutting machine - pretty much make whatever I want.

readable from 30 metres heh - open to interpretation a bit. is that 20/20 vision on a 18 year old, crystal clear day. In that case - 3inches high ;)

On a recent trip out to Bjelke-Petersen Dam, I had a chat to the local Queensland Boating & Fisheries Patrol Officer about the Rego numbers on my boat.
I was told that as mine only showed the outline of each character and were not solid/filled-in, they were deemed illegal and I could be fined, even though I purchased the rig new from a dealer with the numbers already afixed.
I was told that from a reasonable distance the numbers can be difficult to read.

The rule is pretty open to interpretation

From their website
"Your ship will be allocated registration symbols. These must be clearly visible in plain characters in a contrasting colour to the hull of your ship. The size of the characters depends on the type of ship and must be able to be read from a distance of 30 metres away."

a bit further down they specify sizes.

Your ship will be allocated registration symbols. These must be clearly visible in plain characters in a contrasting colour to the hull of your ship. The size of the characters depends on the type of ship and must be able to be read from a distance of 30 metres away.

Ships not capable of planing should have characters a minimum of 75mm high on the sides or on the stern.

Personal water craft should have characters a minimum of 75mm high on both sides.

Ships capable of planing should have characters a minimum of 200mm high on the sides.

cheers
