Is there any formula for rope/anchor/boat size,
just been given a 50 metre coil of 8mm rope .What would be the maximum size anchor/ boat you would use this on.

Thanks
John

John
Most retail shops have anchor sizes to suit boat sizes so maybe a quick call to them might help you.

As far as anchor rope goes i have been using 8mm rope on a 5.7 overall length plate boat for ever and not once has it broken. We have had that much pressure on the rope trying to free the anchor that the boat would spin 180 within seconds on the spot and the rope never has failed. Silver rope is very strong stuff.

Hi John

Whitworths brochure shows the following for 8mm rope:
Boat: Rope:
4.5m LOA 2m Beam 8mm diameter
6m LOA 2.5m Beam 8mm diameter
7.5m LOA 2.7m Beam 10mm diameter

Normal scope for your anchor line is about 3:1 (ie 10mtr depth = 30mtr of rope out) but increase to 5:1 or greater in rough conditions or overnight etc.

Using the above you can estimate amount of anchor rope you need to carry for depth of water you fish in (plus some for margin of safety of course).

Hope that helps

Hi JohnK,
I realise that most of the posters are from Queensland.
However if you are holidaying in Victoria here are the particulars from Victorian Marine Safety website

Row boat
35 metres of stabilised polypropylene =10mm
or 35metres of8mm nylon

Less than 5m
45metres of stabilised polypropylene =10mm
or 45metres of 8mm nylon

5m to 8m
50 metres of polypropylene(stabilised against actinic degeneration)=12mm
or 50metres of 10mm nylon

Hi John,
That copy and paste will not work.
You can find the Qld safety regulations here.
http://www.msq.qld.gov.au/qt/msq.nsf/index/safety_equipment_rec

They are very different from ours.
