Hi folks,
I have a 2002 385 Edgetracker fitted out with a 25hp Merc. The hull says it is rated for a 35hp. Does this mean that the hull can only handle the power of a 35hp motor, or could I get away with a 40hp lite weight motor. eg a 40hp LW 2stroke Merc weighs 69kgs vs a 30hp 4stroke Johno weighing 96kg???

What do you reckon?

BOTH

Major safety issue Rob - i had a work aqauintance destroy a transom with a motor 5hp over max. reccomendation.

That thing will fly on 35hp. Don't fool with it or you will compromise insurance even if professionally done

For all intent and purposes that's exactly right, 35 HP is it and if there was also a maximum weight (as many specifications do these days) then one must keep below the max HP AND the max weight.

Cheers, Kerry.

Well then - the next question to ask is where can I get a 35hp Donk? ??? ???

Its about the strength of the transom as well as the safety and stability of the boat.

It would have been tested to the max rating and considered unseaworthy over that.

You can always make the transom stronger, as long as the boat isn't overpowered.

You dont have to use all the power on tap, just dont sink the transom ;D

I think I'll get in touch with Tim Stessl, and see if we can strengthen the transom. Back in 99 they did a project boat in QFM where it was a 4m edgetracker and Kim Bain had a 50hp Honda on it. I think if she can do that, then a lite weight 40hp 2 stroke Merc could work on mine.

You might see me fly past with only 30cm of boat in touch with the water hee hee!
