Hi

A Friend from work is thinking of repowering his fibreglass boat with a Tohatsu 70 Hp Oil injected 2 stroke.

The price he was quoted including installation was very competative.

His concerns are however, is their reliabilty, Manufacturers warranty, Back up Service and Economy.

Has anybody have any comments positive or negative towards this motor or towards Tohatsu Outboards in general.

I have always thought they were a reasonable buy.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Macca

Mate of mine swears by them, they originally weren't available to the general boating public, they were designed and built for the Japanese commercial fishermen.

I can't fault my 50 hp TLDI (two stroke, low pressure direct injection) which I have owned for 6 months. In answer to your question - it's brilliant ;D.

The customer service I had - from the importer was very dissapointing.

On that alone I would not touch them again

I have 2 of them, an 18 and a 90hp. They are great motors, being very economical for a two stroke. My 90 uses about a third less fuel than my old V4 Envinrude 85 hp. They have a great power to weight ratio and tend to have more useable power for a stated HP than other makes. They have a reputation for being reliable and I have not had any problems with my motors. As you said they are very competively priced and if you shop around from time to time there are some super deals available. I have heard that their parts can be dearer than other makes, though I havent had to buy any!

I have been looking around for my 1st rig for the last couple of days and 1 of the guys i spoke to reckons they are the 2nd or 3rd best selling motor in Japan. He had no reason to lie to me as it was not the motor we had been talking about for my own outfit, i had simply asked about them after seeing one on a used rig in his yard.

Surf Life Saving Australia are or were big users of them so I am sure they would have done their homework. I dont know if they still buy them or have gone to another brand.
If I remember I will ask today at work.

Our familly has owned a heap of them but this 6HP 4 stroke my father has gave us some problems and the main problem was the Brisbane deal and distributor. It took 6 months to fix it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tohatsu's have always been a fairly good motor and very under rated by many in favour of the bigger brands but then didn't really have the broad HP range of the bigger brands.

As for time things take to get fixed well get look at the heap of big name outboard still out there that will never be fixed :-X

Cheers, Kerry.

Just for interest the Nissan/Tohatsu is reputed to be the largest selling outboard in the world for many years now!
They do have more power for HP as well because of a slight change in the standard it is measured by, something like 5% at least this was true 5 years ago. The old dt suzuki's were the same.
Smart choice if the backup is there?, nice to break the mold everynow and then :D. nq

i've noticed quite a few on race boats (or more Tinny race boats) - seem to be popular.
