If you can stretch the budget to the JRC-FF50, its well worth it. It gets really good soundings and gives you the option of going deeper in the future.

One of the guys I fish with has the Furuno fCV 600L
Nice bit of gear [smiley=2thumbsup.gif]

The furuno has a lot of power, you are going to need this fishing deep tempest. I believe power is everything when you are fishing deep water

"what colour sounder to buy????" one with lots of colours, and not just one, would be the best.

Kingfisher25, I've got the Furuno and it's a cracker, does everything really well from 2m to 100m+. I've also got a mate who has the FF50 and he swears by it. I think whatever you choose you get what you pay for and if you pick a good quality unit you won't be disapointed.

Dale- The JRC is a top unit mate and most people buy them through TMQ electronics, but from what you have indicated your currently looking at units that are a little more affordable. For a couple of grand you'll be looking at an ff50 or the furuno 582 (which i use) couple that with a high quality transducer and youve got all you'll ever need. But at a more reasonable price the fcv 600L is great value.
Many units make wild claims about power and output, but in the real world they dont perform anything like there specs, all the above units do however.
The ff50 and 582 or 581 can have diplexers and 1kw tranducer output but this is a little overkill for rec fishing. As previously said you get what you pay for...foxy

ff50.
Works to any depth u can drop a line to...
Tru story:
Doing approx 18-20 kts out from the shoals to the shelf at Sandy Cape and picked up individual Pearlies in 110m of water.
Dropped down, bagged out on some huge ones, thought we had the toyota classic wrapped up, only to find out they don't weigh them in the comp!!!
(Pearlies are particularly hard to find as they show up a different colour on the above sounder)
