Gday , i am experiencing problems with my anchore holding , 7 out 0f 10 times the anchore will just skip across the bottom and not hold the boat, i am thinking that the anchore may bit a bit small for the boat especialy when the weather is a bit on the sad side i have not had this problem with other boats, any help getting this problem sorted would be great as it is rather frustrating to get out to do some fishing and end up spending a lot of time getting the anchore to bite. cheers

i sometimes have that problem.
7 out of 10 times the chain is tangled around the anchor.
i've got heavy chain, and it needs to be lowered slooowwwly.
maybe thats just me though.

yeah i have seen that happen before but the chain isnt getting tanggled with the anchore this time so i dont know i think i might try a bigger anchore .

What size anchor and how much chain are you using. The lenght of your chain should be at least as long as your boat. I have 10m of chain on a 6.8m boat and it holds no problems. You are often better adding more chain than getting a bigger anchor unless the anchor is way undersize for your rig.

Cheers,

Had the same problem when first encountering the stronger flows at the Pin. Including a longer piece of chain did the trick. There seems to need the right balance between the weight of chain and length but I reckon that the length is the most important as it gives you weight also.

The anchor I have now is too big for the boat so that I can get away with only 1m of chain.
But a person can buy straight of the shelf a plow anchor that is faulty (mine is) Instead of doing a fairly flat dig straight down like normal the blades/shaft are out of wack somehow and the anchor wants to only skip along on its side until it catches, increasing chain length doesnt help much, even on a soft sand beach I have to stomp on the ba%$#rd to get it started mostly >:(. You might have one of those?? I have had this boat for a long time so know what a good anchor should do with it.
This is the second faulty plough I have had over any boat.

I cannot tell it is faulty by eye, it just wont work well no matter what, should have grabbed the one next to it on the shelf ::).
If you buy another the same your problems may be solved??
A good anchor simply works, 9 times out of 10 it is the anchor not the boat. nq

nqcairns, i have plough which i use when fishing the wrecks down here due to the nature of the bottom(mighta mentioned once before??)..
Now i paid $130 for that anchor and the two previouse to that , that just got dropped a wee too close to the wrecks and no second guessing what happened there lol..
BUT!!! last lot of plough anchors near same size as what i purchased and from same place i spotted were somewhere's between $50-$60 so no explaining needed why they might be inferior and not holding as well....
Mindya looked awfully close to the same thing?/, n cant understand why they wouldnt hold as good??..
Cheers

Get yourself a sarca anchor and use 3 times depth in normal conditions and up to 5 times depth in rough conditions.
I never have any problems now that I use a sarca and 2 mtrs of chain only. Local water is westernport which is deep and fast flow

Depending on the bottom the type of anchor can be of little relevance as with a hard bottom even a smallish boat once mobile can haul quite a large anchor and once mobile there's not all that much that can stop it untill the bottom becomes anchor friendly.

There is absolutely no guarantee that any type of anchor will hold under all conditions.

So without knowing exactly what this problem anchor is, how can there be any subjective comments.

Cheers, Kerry.

Kerry here is how:

because of the very nature of this board.

Because we are not dicussing open heart surgery over an open chest.

Because he is not on his vessels laptop and sat link desperatly asking us for help to stop his draging ship form hitting the rocks in 10min.

Because we have been asked a riddle that no one but the poster will be able to actually test.

Like I said 'tis the very nature of this board'

If it were my Q all and any comments would be welcome irrespective of their end validity. cheers nq

Volvo, yeah seems that even plough anchors might be a lot like other purchases, you get what you pay for.
Anyway half your luck losing those anchors :-/ I just cannot get rid of this one it seems, it is way way past due for a watery grave.
Because of this thread I might have a go at turning my cheapy into a $100 one and spend an hour or so fixing it, the thing always flops to the right, I have a selecton of big hammers :D. Worth a try anyway.

Well Nq then some in-fill details might actually help the issue

Just saying my anchor don't hold means what ??? What anchor, what bottom, what chain, what, what, what, what

When you've seen a 6m boat going down hill dragging an 80lb plough as if there was no tommow some will sort of understand that ALL the details help.

So far no details apart from the anchor don't hold, so I'll put the questions back for more details and leave the crystal ball stuff to you..

Cheers, Kerry.

My anchor don't work either.

Every time I want to drop anchor, I hollor up to the bow, "over you go" but evry damn time I end up having to get up and do it my self.
Anchor just doesn't seem to have a very good work ethic, sits there and makes me do all the work. ;D ;D

In my old boat I use to have anchor problems. Ended up not having enough chain. Increased the chain with short link, and problem solved. My current boat came with 6m of reasonably heavy chain (is a 5.5m glass boat) and even after changing over to a reef pick, I have no probs holding in any depth, and even in sand. I put it down to the chain.

cheers for all the feed back but as it turns out it was the anchor i bent one of the ploughs on its first trip to the bottom and so it was only folding out one way and i guess i was un-lucky enough for it to fall on the bad side most of the time after that i have since brought a new anchor (well two new anchors but that is another story) and extended the lenght of the anchor rope and chain and it seems to have sorted the problem. and just for the record it was a plough anchor on sandy, rocky, shelly i tryed the old one on quiet a few bottoms. Now i can stay still long enough to catch some fish, well hopefully ;D. cheers.

::)All Kerry was asking was "So without knowing exactly what this problem anchor is, how can there be any subjective comments."
If someone requires information such as this regarding anchor holding it would be helpful to state the type of anchor they are using!
It would be like asking "how do I tune my outboard"? Then not stating what make or model.

....and just for the record it was a plough anchor....

So was it a "plough" or a "danforth" type?

Cheers, Kerry.

Glad it eventually had a happy ending.
